Clifford had completed elementary school through the 8th grade, and Flora had completed the second year of high school. Their oldest child, Horace, had married and no longer lived with his parents, while the youngest six were enumerated with the couple in 1940. Wallace was 23 years of age, had completed one year of high school, and worked as a farmhand on the family farm; Hilda was 22 years of age, had completed four years of high school, and worked at home doing housework; Sarah was 20 years old and had completed four years of high school; Newlin was 14 years old and had completed elementary school through the 8th grade; Mildred was 13 years old and had completed elementary school through the 7th grade; and Bernice was 8 years old and had completed elementary school through the 2nd grade. The four youngest children, Sarah, Newlin, Mildred and Bernice, had all attended school within the census year.10

The local hero of the event was Jacob B. Klenk who was credited with saving seven lives, one life being that of his sister-in-law, Ethel M. (Yerkes) Klenk, wife of his brother, William F. Klenk. It happened when two passenger trains traveling on a single track of the Philadelphia and Reading Railway collided head-on between the now-defunct Woodmont and Paper Mill stations in Upper Moreland, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. One train was heading from Newtown to Philadelphia and the other in the opposite direction. The result was 27 dead, 70 injured, and the casualties included many who burned to death.9,10
