Sherman's sister, Essie Leora (Crecelius) Hawhee, was enumerated with her daughters and granddaughters in the first household before Sherman's, whose household was on sheet number 3. Essie's family spanned both sheet numbers 2 and 3.6,7

A FAMILY FEUD
James Garland Murdered in Crawford County
by His Brother-in-Law, William S. Ferguson


James Thomas Garland, of Crawford County, and William S. Ferguson, of Orange County, brothers-in-law, met on the forenoon of the 25th at the residence of their father-in-law, John R. Pace, three miles south of Birdseye in Crawford County. The meeting appears to have been accidental, and occurred at the gate in front of Pace’s residence. As soon as they met Ferguson demanded of Garland the immediate payment of an old debt claimed to be owing him by Garland. The reply by Garland to this demand was that he was willing to pay anything he honestly owed, but not until a settlement of disputed items had been made.

The declaration of Garland greatly exasperated Ferguson and he immediately made an attack on Garland, striking him in the neck with his fist and knocking him senseless to the ground. Ferguson continued the attack by jumping upon Garland with his knees, frequently repeating this and finally choking Garland, the latter dying while Ferguson had him by the throat.

Finding that Garland was dead, Ferguson lifted the body and carried it into the residence of his father-in-law. He then went out to where his horse was hitched, mounted him and galloped away. The murder, from all the information so far obtainable, seems to have been utterly unprovoked and cold blooded. Both have families. (New Albany Ledger)

Searching for a Murderer


English, Indiana, 30 March. The Garland brothers, who are the brothers of the man killed on 24th (sic) instant near Birdseye by William S. Ferguson of Dubois County, are at the head of a posse of men armed with Winchesters, and scouring that county in search of Ferguson. If caught, Ferguson will be lynched. Rumor has it that Garland and Ferguson had made threats and counter threats to whip each other, but this is hardly supposable on the part of Garland who was just recovering from an attack of measles.

A MURDERER CAPTURED

William S. Ferguson Taken to Dubois for Trial


Princeton, Indiana. Special: William S. Ferguson was captured in this city today. About two months ago he and his brother-in-law, James Thomas Garland, engaged in a quarrel at Birdseye, sixty-five miles east of this city, over an account. It is claimed that Ferguson owed Garland. A scuffle took place and Ferguson grabbed Garland by the whiskers with one hand and with the other pounded him to death. He afterward carried the victim to his yard, washed him and laid him out. He made his escape. It is claimed he has been in hiding in southern Indiana all the time. He is a tough-looking character and is said to be a terror to the locality in which he lived. The good people will no doubt feel relieved over his capture. Judge Lynch may take him in charge when he reaches his destination. He pleaded with the officers not to take him to his home – Dubois County – but he was nevertheless taken to that county this evening. A big reward was offered for his arrest.

A Jasper special says: William S. Ferguson, who a few weeks ago murdered James Thomas Garland, his brother-in-law, who asked him to pay a bill he owed him, was captured this morning near Princeton, Indiana by Sheriff Key and his deputy, James F. McAfee. He was placed in jail here this evening to await trial at the next term of the circuit court, which convenes next Monday.
