Captain Josiah Edson1

b. 1682, d. 16 January 1762
Father*Joseph Edson2 d. b 1712
Mother*Experience ______2
Birth*1682Captain Josiah Edson was born in 1682.2
(Nephew) Land Records22 December 1702Josiah, who later became known as Captain Josiah Edson, would have been only about 20 years of age when a man identified as Captain Josiah Edson served on a committee chosen by the Purchasers of Bridgewater to resolve the bounds between the houses of John Bolton in Bridgewater and his neighbor Israel Alger. It is believed more likely that Josiah's uncle Josiah Edson Esq. served on the committee and that "Captain" was either an honorary title or an error. On 22 December 1702 the committee, consisting of Josiah Edson, Samuel Allen Sr. and Edward Fobes, measured the land by the box rule measure and set up bounds between the neighbors. At the northeasterly end was a black oak marked on four sides, and about in the middle of the length, a stake and stones, and at the southwesterly end, near the river, a stake and stones. Israel Alger had already cleared about one acre of swamp woods that was going to fall within John Bolton's land, so the committee agreed that Israel Alger should have the grass on it for four years more from the above date.3
Marriage*27 July 1704He married Sarah Packard, daughter of Zacheus Packard and Sarah Howard, on 27 July 1704 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England).1,4
(Lands Committee) Land Records2 July 1720Josiah Edson, William Brett and Josiah Snell served on the Purchasers Committee for the township of Bridgewater on 2 July 1720 when they recorded their settlement of the bounds between John Bolton Jr. and his neighbor John Willis in the town's Purchasers Book.5
(Witness to Deed) Land Records22 February 1730/31Josiah Edson and Sarah Edson witnessed the signatures of Sarah (Bolton) Leonard and her husband William Leonard, Elizabeth (Bolton) May and her husband Michael May, Joseph Bolton and Nicholas Bolton, all of Bridgewater, on 22 February 1730/31 when they sold to Jonathan Washburn of Bridgewater the land they had, a few months earlier, received as heirs in the distribution of their deceased sister Mary Bolton's estate. The deed was recorded in Plymouth County on 18 May 1761.6

Israel Alger had already cleared about one acre of swamp woods that was going to fall within John Bolton's land, so the committee agreed that Israel Alger should have the grass on it for four years more from the above date.2

(Added Proprietor) Land Grant1656Samuel Edson was one of two men added later to the initial list of fifty-four original proprietors for the development of the town that would become Bridgewater, Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts (Plymouth Colony). The original list of men, most if not all from Duxbury, included John Willis, Solomon Leonard, Francis West, John Ames, John Howard, Thomas Hayward, Philip Delano, George Soule, Moses Simmons, John Alden, Christopher Wadsworth and James Lindall and was approved in 1645. When the town of Bridgewater was actually incorporated in 1656 the two new proprietors had been added and there were a total of fifty-six. Of these proprietors, only eighteen, about one-third, actually relocated and became residents of the new plantation. Samuel Edson was probably granted his later proprietor's share in exchange for building the first mill in the town. He had come to Bridgewater from Salem, in Essex County.

The area known as the Bridgewaters was originally inhabited by Wampanoag who called it Saughtuchquett (Satucket). In 1642 when the township of Marshfield was separated from Duxbury and became its own distinct entity, Duxbury petitioned the court for additional land “to the westward” in compensation.

The General Court granted their petition in 1645 and six trustees, Captain Myles Standish, John Alden, George Soule, Constant Southworth, John Rogers, and William Brett were appointed to divide the land. The action by the General Court was primarily an authority to purchase land, and Captain Standish, Samuel Nash, and Constant Southworth were appointed to make the purchase. The deed was signed on 23 Mar 1649.

The Bridgewater lands were divided among the inhabitants “by an agreement among themselves”. Unfortunately, there is no record to tell us how the town proceeded to agree to their division, or how, by whom, or when it was determined what residence or other circumstance should entitle anyone to a share.
