(Son-in-Law) Census US 187011 June 1870Alexander Russell Webb appeared on the 1870 census taken on 11 June 1870 in the household of his parents-in-law Lucien West Conger and Elizabeth Conger in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Lucien was 46 and his occupation was Jeweler. The value of his real estate was recorded as $12,000 and his personal estate as $15,000. Elizabeth was 43 and keeping house. Included in the household were the couple's 14-year-old son Clarence LaForest Conger, recorded as "C. La Fay Conger", who was at school, and Edith B. Conger, believed to have been a relative and not yet identified, age 9 and born in Illinois, their newly married daughter Laura, age 17 and her husband, Alexander R. Webb, age 22, also a Jeweler, the 81-year-old Samuel Shove, Elizabeth Conger's stepfather, and a domestic, Mary Reil, born in Ireland, age 30.

The Crayton Hall Conger family also lived in Chicago Ward 5 in 1870, probably fairly near, since both families were enumerated by the same person only two days apart. In the other Conger household, Crayton was Lucien's brother and Louisa (Shove) Conger was Elizabeth's half-sister and Samuel Shove's daughter.3

Mattie Victoria Webb1,2

b. 10 February 1885, d. 10 June 1982
Birth*10 February 1885Mattie Victoria Webb was born on 10 February 1885 in Texas.1,3
Marriage*1904She married Leonard W. Miller in 1904.1,3,4
Census US 1910*9 May 1910[PGF] and Leonard W. Miller were enumerated on the 1910 census taken on 9 May 1910 in Justice Precinct 1, Eastland County, Texas. Leonard was 38 years of age and a farmer working on his own account, and Mattie was 25 years of age. They owned their farm free of mortgage, had been married for 6 years and Mattie had given birth to two children, both of whom were living. Cyrus was 4 years old and Wanita was age 11 months.5
Census US 1920*16 January 1920Mattie and Leonard W. Miller were enumerated on the 1920 census taken on 16 January 1920 in Decatur, Wise County, Texas. Leonard's name was recorded as "Glenn" by the census taker. He was 47 years of age and an unemployed laborer, and Mattie was 35 years of age. They rented their house and their four children were enumerated with them in 1920. Cyrus, Wanita and Evelyn, ages 14, 10, and 8 years, respectively, had all attended school within the census year, and Clara was 6 years old and not yet in school.1
(Wife) Death20 August 1928Mattie became a widow when Leonard W. Miller died on 20 August 1928 at age 55.4
Census US 1930*2 April 1930Mattie V. Miller was enumerated as the head of her household on the 1930 census taken on 2 April 1930 at 418 W. Commerce Street, Eastland, Eastland County, Texas. She was 45 years of age, a widow, and owned her house which was valued at $1,400. Her four children and a daughter-in-law were enumerated with her in 1930. Her son Cyrus was 24 years of age and worked on a surveying crew, and his wife, Vinita Miller, was 18 years old. They were newlyweds. Mattie's daughters, Wanita, Evelyn and Clara, were ages 20, 18 and 16, respectively, and Evelyn and Clara had both attended school within the census year.6
(Mother-in-Law) Arrested and Charged13 November 1938Her son-in-law, L. L. Powell, age 25, and Rex Holt, 24, both residents of Cisco, were arrested on 13 November 1938 in Fort Worth, Texas, and charged with automobile theft and armed robbery of a service station. A third man, Pete Eudy, who had left the car a few minutes before Powell and Holt were arrested, later surrendered to police. The two men initially in custody readily admitted their part in the robbery, blaming whisky for their complicity. The men had stolen the car in Cisco, Eastland County, Texas and driven it to Stamford, in Jones County, Texas where they committed the robbery, then were apprehended with the car in Fort Worth.7,8,9,10,11
(Mother-in-Law) Criminal Conviction4 May 1939Her son-in-law's trial in connection with the Stamford service station holdup on 13 November 1938 began on Thursday, morning, 4 May 1939 in District Court, Anson, Texas. Powell was the last of the three men to appear in court. Both J. M. Eudy and Rexford Holt had been found guilty of armed robbery and had been sentenced to five years in state prison. Powell pleaded not guilty and jury selection was completed at 11 o'clock.

The State called only two witnesses, the owner of the station that was robbed, and a customer who was inside the station at the time. The owner was the first witness examined, and testified that three men entered his station the night of the holdup but was unable to positively identify Powell. The customer, who was inside the station talking to Pete Eudy, who had previously been convicted in connected with the holdup, definitely identified Powell as the third man. It was established that J. M. Eudy was also called "Pete" Eudy. He said that Powell and Rexford Holt, who had been convicted the previous day, followed the owner into the station after their car had been serviced, and the holdup followed immediately. The customer testified that Powell was the one who locked him and the owner in the men's washroom while Eudy kept them covered at pistol point and Holt looted the cash register.

The jury deliberated only 30 minutes, and returned a verdict of guilty, making Powell the third and last man convicted in the holdup. He was sentenced, as were his two accomplices, to five years in state prison.7,8,9,10,11

Census US 1940*3 April 1940Mattie was enumerated as the head of her household on the 1940 census taken on 3 April 1940 at 210 Folts Street, Eastland, Eastland County, Texas. She was 55 years of age and a widow. She owned her house which was valued at $1,000, had lived in the same house in 1935, and had completed her education through the 8th grade of elementary school. Two of her daughters and a grandson were enumerated in her household in 1940. Her daughter Clara was 24 years of age and single, had completed her education through the 4th year of high school, and worked as a stenographer for the city of Eastland. Clara had also lived with her mother, in the same house, in 1935. Mattie's daughter, Evelyn (Miller) Powell, with her son, Larry Lorraine Powell, were also enumerated with Mattie in 1940. Evelyn was 28 years of age and married, had completed her education through the 2nd year of high school, and did housework for a private family. She had lived in Eastland County in 1935, although with her husband, and not with her mother. Evelyn's surviving son, Larry Lorraine Powell, was 4 years old. Evelyn's husband, Larry Lorraine Powell, was a prisoner in the Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas.12

Sarah Webb1

b. 30 January 1702/3, d. before 17 February 1749
Father*Reverend Joseph Webb1,2
Mother*Elizabeth Nichols3
Baptism*30 January 1702/3Sarah Webb was baptized on 30 January 1702/3 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut.1,2
Marriage*circa 1724She married as his second wife John Dennie, son of Albert Dennie and Elizabeth Wakeman, circa 1724.3,1,2
Estate*1732Sarah (Webb) and her husband John Dennie were named in an agreement about the division of her father's estate in 1732. They were living in Fairfield, Connecticut, at that time.1
Relocation*1733Sarah (Webb) and John Dennie moved to Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England), in or after 1733.1
(Wife) Will25 December 1744Sarah (Webb) Dennie was named in the will of her husband John Dennie dated 25 December 1744. He bequeathed to his loving wife Sarah forever one third part of all his estate both real and personal whether in this province, the colony of Connecticut, or elsewhere at her own disposal, his three Negro servants together with all household stuff. His will directed that 500 pounds lawful money of the province be lodged with his executors to be put to interest and improved for any of his children who were under age at the time of his death. He bequeathed to his son Albert Dennie 25 pounds lawful money which, with what he had already received, was his full portion and share. All the remainder of his estate, whether real or personal, he gave to his four other sons: John, William, Thomas and Joseph, and to his five daughters Mary, Grizzel, Elizabeth, Sarah and Abigail to be equally divided among them.

The biggest surprise in the will, published by researchers in 2002, was learning about Joseph, the fourth son of John Dennie. Joseph had not been mentioned in earlier research published in 1930-1932.

Mr. Dennie's will named his children in groups of men and then of women. The order of the naming by gender by their father in his will corresponds to the known dates from records in Fairfield Church. His will was not challenged in court.1
(Wife) Deathbefore 3 February 1747Sarah became a widow when John Dennie died before 3 February 1747.1
Death*before 17 February 1749She died in either 1748 or before 17 February 1749 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England).1
Guardianship*17 February 1749Guardians were appointed in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England), for Sarah (Webb)'s minor children, Thomas, Abigail and Joseph, on 17 February 1749.3
Estate* Sarah died without a will. Her inventory, at six pages, was shorter than her husband's and listed the contents of an upper middle class Boston house of the time and 620 pounds of personal articles. Her inventory included only two of the slaves, Caesar, with the one foot, and Flora and, as with her husband's inventory, listed no real estate. Her son, William Dennie was appointed Adminstator.1
Land Records* The distribution of John Dennie's Connecticut real estate as bequeathed in his will of 1744 was not known to researchers until 2002 and presented many questions. He left his real estate in two parts: two-thirds of his Connecticut property directly to his nine named children, and one-third of all his estate forever "both real and personal whether in this province the colony of Connecticut or elsewhere" to his widow Sarah. This bequest created an estate in real property in Connecticut for Sarah (Webb) Dennie, his widow. Because Sarah died without leaving a will, it was left to the courts to identify and name Sarah's children and heirs.

Land records in Fairfield and in Ridgefield, both in Fairfield County, Connecticut, gave researchers information on the identity of Sarah's heirs. The land records also clarified John Dennie's two wives and clearly identified their two sets of children. Sarah (Webb) Dennie's children were named, and those of Mary (Edwards) Dennie were identified as the other children. Joseph Dennie appeared with Sarah's children as her heir, but not as her son.

The Dennie children all eventually, after they attained their majority, or for the girls, married, sold their Fairfield and Ridgefield real estate. Researchers noted in their report, as an aside, that the real estate was of small value compared to the other property they inherited from their father.

Determined researchers explained their strategy by stating that complete land research for a parcel of property required that deeds be located for all the land sales of the heirs of John Dennie, which they called "the two thirds of the property" and of the heirs of Sarah Dennie, or "the one third of the property". They believed these transactions would identify all the interested parties in the entire package of real estate under review. They knew they were looking for a minimum of two deeds: one for the nine children of John Dennie and one for the court determined heirs of John's widow, Sarah (Webb) Dennie. Unfortunately, they did not know the maximum number of deeds they were looking for, since each of the children could have sold separately, one at a time.

Extensive research of the Dennie family land records in both Fairfield and Ridgefield was said by the researchers to have been "revealing, surprising and astonishing." They took special note in the first two land sales in the grouping and the unity of eight of the heirs. Eight of the nine children named in John Dennie's will joined together to sell all their two thirds interest at one time in one transaction. The deed named each of the eight stating "which said [children] are eight of the children and heirs of John Dennie late... Whereas the same John Dennie by his last will and testament duly proved gave and bequeathed unto his said eight children and his other son Joseph two full third parts of all the real estate... nine acres in Fairfield..." The deed was dated 24 Jan 1758 and recorded 8 Jun 1762. All of the parties named except Joseph signed at one time.

The second deed they found recorded in Fairfield was the sale by the Sarah Dennie heirs, again excepting Joseph. Sarah's four children were named and described as "children and heirs of Sarah Dennie late of Boston deceased intestate... whereas Mr. John Dennie late... by his last will duly proved approved and allowed gave and bequeathed to his widow the said Sarah Dennie one full third part of all his real estate in fee simple... The same Sarah soon after dyed intestate leaving the said William Thomas Sarah and Abigail and one Joseph Dennie her children and heirs". The deed was dated and recorded on the same dates as the first deed, 24 Jan 1758 and 8 Jun 1758, respectively.

The researchers also noted that William Dennie had received a double portion as the eldest son of the intestate Sarah, not the eldest son of John, and sold both parts. Sarah's other three children each received and sold one part. Joseph Dennie had received one portion which he would sell separately, later. John Dennie's son John had received two portions of his father's estate, and each of his siblings had received one. All, except Joseph, sold in full in the first deed described.1

Joseph's father, John Dennie, was married to Sarah Webb at the time Joseph was conceived and born, and Joseph was raised by Sarah. In the source Joseph Dennie and his Circle, the author states, unequivocally and without explanation, that Joseph was the son of John Dennie and Sarah Webb. In the Nutmegger source, however, Sarah as Joseph's mother is, from probate and land records, doubted and considered untrue. John O. Webster

Research Notes1806John O. Webster, whose occupation was "retailer, commerce(s)" was listed in the 1806 Boston City Directory. His address was on Ship Street, the same street where John Bolton, the Marine Mariner, lived in 1807. If he was the same Webster that John Bolton was in business with, he could be a clue, and possibly a brother or brother-in-law of Zilpah's. We need to research this John O. Webster to see what we can learn.1

His address was on Ship Street which was also the mariner John Bolton's street in 1807. If our Ancestor John Bolton worked as a mariner in Boston, and if John O. Webster was the Webster John Bolton was in business with, he would be an excellent clue, and possibly a brother or brother-in-law of Zilpah's. We need to research this John O.
