Mary Kelly Waldron1
b. 1822, d. 5 May 1908
Birth* | 1822 | Mary Kelly Waldron was born in 1822 in County Leitrim, Ireland.1 |
(Daughter) Death | 1848 | Both of Mary's parents were deceased when she married. Her father had been murdered in 1848.2 |
Marriage* | 22 August 1855 | She married Robert Potterton, son of Thomas Potterton and Eleanora Anne Hinds, on 22 August 1855 in St. Mary's Church, Jervis Street, Dublin.1,3,2 |
Marriage Settlement* | | Mary's dowry was a farm, two hundred and sixty eight English acres at Annaduff, County Leitrim.2 |
No Issue* | | Robert and Mary (Waldron) Potterton had no children.1,2 |
Illness* | 7 March 1880 | Mary's husband's over-achieving brain became mentally ill over time. According to Joyce, Robert's mental decline began to show in 1871 when he was only forty-eight. That year, he was absent for illness for seven months from his post as District Inspector in Limerick. Then, from 1874 until 1876, when he became District Inspector in Armagh, he was absent altogether. Further evidence that he may have had problems was provided by a deed of 1877. It recorded that his brother, William, acting as a trustee of Robert and Mary’s marriage settlement, took over the lease of the farm at Annaduff. In April 1880, Robert was listed on a deed as "of Armagh", although by that time he was actually in a mental hospital in Dublin. His wife Mary, on 7 March 1880, had had him committed to Hampstead, Drumcondra, a private mental hospital in the Dublin suburb, while she took up residence nearby at Alpine Lodge, Glasnevin. Robert, aged fifty-seven at the time, remained at Hampstead until his death twenty-one years later.2 |
(Wife) Death | 13 March 1901 | Mary became a widow when Robert Potterton died on 13 March 1901.2,4,3 |
Death* | 5 May 1908 | She died on 5 May 1908 in County Dublin at age 861 |
Burial* | | and was buried in St. James Churchyard, Athboy, County Meath.1 |
