The birth of the first child attributed to them both was as early as 1789, so they may have married before 1801. They appear by the consistent dates of their children's births to have been together between their 1801 and 1813 marriage ceremonies, and the reason they married again is unclear. Possibilities being explored include the laws of inheritance and the differences between the marriage laws of England and Scotland at the time.1 
Census Wales 1841*Mary Fowke was enumerated as the head of her household on the 1841 census on St. Mary's Street, St. Mary Within, Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Her age was 70, and her occupation was recorded as "Independent Means". Living with her was daughter Henrietta, also of independent means and age 40, son Philip, independent means and age 35, Charles age 15, probably a grandson, and two household servants. Her son Sunderland and his two young daughters were enumerated at the neighboring home.2

An organized search for her had begun as soon as she was reported missing, It was called off on Tuesday, then resumed on Wednesday at the request of her daughters, Nellie Wymore and Eula Johnson. Nelllie, who lived in Boise, Idaho, described her mother as an elderly 85-year-old woman, who was "quite active", although her memory had been failing. Nellie believed her mother may have been picked up along a highway, then left off somewhere, and that with her memory failing, she may have forgotten who she was or where she was from. Nellie said her mother was about five feet tall, weighed about 117 pounds, and had white hair. At the time of her disappearance, she had no money with her.

Newspapers reported that many searchers and woods workers had been released from their jobs to aid in the hunt for the missing woman, and that a helicopter had also been in use. Some searchers reported on Wednesday that they had combed the area so thoroughly it appeared doubtful the elderly Mrs. Jewett was anywhere near the spot she wandered away from on Sunday.

By Thursday, October 17, Rose had still not been found. Newspapers reminded their readers that the frail, elderly woman had been missing for two months, since August 11, in the heavily timbered mountain country near Elk River. They reported that Rose's daughter, Eula Johnson of Juliaetta, Idaho, was offering a reward for the finding of her mother who had disappeared while on a family huckleberry picking expedition. Eula would pay $500 for information leading to the finding of her mother alive and $300 for information leading to the discovery of her body. Volunteers and deputies, aided by planes and bloodhounds, had made a long and extensive search of the area without turning up any trace of Mrs. Jewett. There had been speculation the woman might have been given a ride by a motorist, but officers had checked out all tips without result. Mrs. Johnson stated she had not given up hope that her mother would be found alive.

Two of Rose's sons, Joseph and Hubert, had predeceased their mother's disappearance in 1957. In addition to Rose's two daughters, Nellie and Eula, who were featured in the newspaper stories regarding her disappearance, five of Rose's other children were living. Clara, Preston, William and Nora also lived in Idaho at the time, and Bulah, who had lived in Idaho much of her life, had moved to Oregon after her second marriage in 1955.7,8

The arrest was made on instructions received by wire at the Medical Lake sheriff's office from the constable's office at Council Bluffs. Olson was working as a plumber in Washington, and his sister, Pearl, and her husband, Henry J. Lubben, were employed at a summer resort at Medical Lake. Olson claimed to the officer who made the arrest that "no such charge would lie against him." He stated he left his Iowa home in April of the previous year and came west for the purpose of bettering his condition. He did not desert his wife, he claimed, but left her $50, all the money he had except what he needed for the trip, and the plan was understood by her that he would send for her as soon as he could become located in Washington.4 
Census US 1910*2 May 1910Pearl and Henry J. Lubben were enumerated on the 1910 census taken on 2 May 1910 at 408 Fairview Avenue, Ward 5, Spokane, Spokane County, Washington. Henry was 25 years of age and worked in real estate on his own account, and Pearl was 24 years of age and possibly worked as a monogrammer on her own account. They rented their house, had been married for four years and had no children. Pearl's brother, Vernon E. Olson, whose name was recorded as "Victor E. Oleson", was enumerated with them in 1910. He was 29 years of age and a plumber, and reported as single. He had not been working on April 15, and had been out of work for 36 weeks in 1909.5

The group established their new home in that part of Washington County, Pennsylvania, which would become Greene County in 1796.4 
Marriage*He married his brother Zephaniah's widow, Mary (Heaton) Luce, daughter of Isaac Heaton and Hannah Bowen, probably in Washington County, Pennsylvania.1 
(2nd Husband) Research NotesBecause Samuel married his deceased brother Zephaniah's wife, all of Mary (Heaton) Luce's eight children have the same surname, and not many of their birth dates have been identified. The dates of the marriages are not yet known, and neither is the date of Zephaniah's death. Tenmile Country listed all of the children as Samuel's, however the Heaton sources indicate some of the children were from Mary's first marriage. We don't know for sure which husband fathered each child, and have simply "assigned" the children to either Samuel or Zephaniah in what we believe to be a thoughtful, albeit uncertain, manner. We look forward to correcting our errors as we learn more information.1,5,2

(1st Husband) Research NotesBecause Zephaniah's wife would marry his brother Samuel after Zephaniah's death, all of Mary (Heaton) Luce's eight children have the same surname, and not many of their birth dates have been identified. The dates of the marriages are not yet known, and neither is the date of Zephaniah's death. Tenmile Country listed all of the children as Samuel's, however the Heaton sources indicate some of the children were from Mary's first marriage. We don't know for sure which husband fathered each child, and have simply "assigned" the children to either Zephaniah or Samuel in what we believe to be a thoughtful, albeit uncertain, manner. We look forward to correcting our errors as we learn more information.1,6,3
