Newspapers reported that many searchers and woods workers had been released from their jobs to aid in the hunt for the missing woman, and that a helicopter had also been in use. Some searchers reported on Wednesday that they had combed the area so thoroughly it appeared doubtful the elderly Mrs. Jewett was anywhere near the spot she wandered away from on Sunday.

By Thursday, October 17, Rose had still not been found. Newspapers reminded their readers that the frail, elderly woman had been missing for two months, since August 11, in the heavily timbered mountain country near Elk River. They reported that Rose's daughter, Eula Johnson of Juliaetta, Idaho, was offering a reward for the finding of her mother who had disappeared while on a family huckleberry picking expedition. Eula would pay $500 for information leading to the finding of her mother alive and $300 for information leading to the discovery of her body. Volunteers and deputies, aided by planes and bloodhounds, had made a long and extensive search of the area without turning up any trace of Mrs. Jewett. There had been speculation the woman might have been given a ride by a motorist, but officers had checked out all tips without result. Mrs. Johnson stated she had not given up hope that her mother would be found alive.

Two of Rose's sons, Joseph and Hubert, had predeceased their mother's disappearance in 1957. In addition to Rose's two daughters, Nellie and Eula, who were featured in the newspaper stories regarding her disappearance, five of Rose's other children were living. An organized search for her had begun as soon as she was reported missing, It was called off on Tuesday, then resumed on Wednesday at the request of her daughters, Nellie Wymore and Eula Johnson. Nelllie, who lived in Boise, Idaho, described her mother as an elderly 85-year-old woman, who was "quite active", although her memory had been failing. Nellie believed her mother may have been picked up along a highway, then left off somewhere, and that with her memory failing, she may have forgotten who she was or where she was from. Nellie said her mother was about five feet tall, weighed about 117 pounds, and had white hair. At the time of her disappearance, she had no money with her.

Newspapers reported that many searchers and woods workers had been released from their jobs to aid in the hunt for the missing woman, and that a helicopter had also been in use. Some searchers reported on Wednesday that they had combed the area so thoroughly it appeared doubtful the elderly Mrs. Jewett was anywhere near the spot she wandered away from on Sunday.

By Thursday, October 17, Rose had still not been found. Newspapers reminded their readers that the frail, elderly woman had been missing for two months, since August 11, in the heavily timbered mountain country near Elk River. They reported that Rose's daughter, Eula Johnson of Juliaetta, Idaho, was offering a reward for the finding of her mother who had disappeared while on a family huckleberry picking expedition. Eula would pay $500 for information leading to the finding of her mother alive and $300 for information leading to the discovery of her body. Volunteers and deputies, aided by planes and bloodhounds, had made a long and extensive search of the area without turning up any trace of Mrs. Jewett. There had been speculation the woman might have been given a ride by a motorist, but officers had checked out all tips without result. Mrs. Johnson stated she had not given up hope that her mother would be found alive.

Two of Rose's sons, Joseph and Hubert, had predeceased their mother's disappearance in 1957. In addition to Rose's two daughters, Nellie and Eula, who were featured in the newspaper stories regarding her disappearance, five of Rose's other children were living. Clara, Preston, William and Nora also lived in Idaho at the time, and Bulah, who had lived in Idaho much of her life, had moved to Oregon after her second marriage in 1955.6,7

Adolph was 38 years of age, had immigrated to the United States in 1900 and was not naturalized. He was able to read and write and worked for wages as a day laborer. He had been working on 15 April 1910, and had been out of work for 3 weeks during 1909. Ida was 39 years of age, and was able to read and write. They rented their house, had been married for six years and the census taker recorded it as the first marriage for each of them. Ida was reported to have given birth to three children, two of whom were living. Two children were enumerated with the couple in 1910. Ida's younger daughter from her first marriage, Evaline Johnson, was recorded with the surname Johnson and as 6 years old, although she was actually about age 13. She was able to read and write and had attended school within the census year. The couple's daughter, Alice Johnson, was 4 years old. Also enumerated in the Johnson household in 1910 was Grace Chase, who was 21 years of age, had been born in Pennsylvania, and worked for wages doing housework for the family. Ida's elder daughter, Mary Jane (Crawford) Melrose, had married and may have been missed by the census taker as they traveled between West Virginia, where they likely married, and Ohio, where their first child was born in 1911.1

Her marital status was unclear because she was recorded with an M, meaning married, and the M was crossed out with no further information. Everyone in the household had lived in the same place, although not the same house, on 1 April 1935.7

Adelaide had given birth to nine children, six of whom were living and resided with their parents in 1910. Bella was 14 years old; Maud was 11; May was 8; Araminta 7; Allen A. was 3 years old and Stewart was nine months. Maud, May and Araminta were all attending school. Allen H.'s father, John R. Johnson was also enumerated with his son's family in 1910. He was 72 years of age and worked as a farm laborer. His wife, Araminta (Wiser) Johnson, was not included in the list of individuals in her son's household in 1910, although other records indicate she also lived there at the time. She had suffered with kidney disease for the past two years, and would die of the disease, probably in her son's home, in May of the following year.2

Johnson were enumerated on the 1920 census taken on 8 January 1920 on Allentown Road, Tylersport Village, Salford Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Allen was 42 years of age and worked as a cigar maker, and Adelaide was 41 years of age. They rented their home, and five of their children were enumerated in their household in 1920. May and Minnie were ages 18 and 16, respectively, and neither had attended school within the census year; son Allen was enumerated with his middle name Arthur, and was 12 years old and attending school; Stewart was 9 years old and also attending school; and young Clarence was 4 years old.

It had been a very hard ten years for the family since the 1910 census. Of the six new babies that had been born during those years, only one, Clarence, had lived longer than ten months. Five had died.6
