Occupation*1831Wilkes Wood Esq. was Judge of the Probate of Wills and for granting Letters of Administrations in 1831 in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. 
(Judge) Administration3 October 1831In a letter to Justice Wilkes Wood dated 3 October 1831, John E. Howard wrote that he was the guardian of the deceased John Bolton's father, Joseph Bolton Jr.. Stating also that the deceased John Bolton died without issue, John E. Howard requested that Jonas Hartwell, a selectman of West Bridgewater, be appointed Administrator of John Bolton's estate.1 
(Judge) Administration4 October 1831The estate of John Bolton of West Bridgewater, who died intestate, was opened for probate on 4 October 1831 in East Bridgewater. Jonas Hartwell was appointed Administrator by Wilkes Wood Esq., Judge of the Probate of Wills, and for granting Letters of Administration, and Hartwell paid a Surety Bond of $200 with Benjamin B. Howard and Libbeus Packard as witnesses.2 
(Judge) Inventory3 April 1832The initial Inventory of the estate of John Bolton, late of West Bridgewater, was filed with Justice Wilkes Wood on 3 April 1832 in East Bridgewater. It had been completed by appraisers Nathan Alger Jr., George W. Lathrop and Stillman Alger and sworn to by Administrator Jonas Hartwell. The initial inventory of the estate was valued at $239.89 and included personal and household items in addition to notes of loans, with interest, against three individuals: Willis Alger, Nathan Alger and John Willis owed the deceased $150.59, $29.75 and $25.32 respectively.2
(Judge) Final Accounting2 April 1833One year later, on 2 April 1833, a second and possibly final Inventory and Expenses of the estate of John Bolton, was submitted by Administrator Jonas Hartwell and filed with Probate Justice Wilkes Wood in East Bridgewater. New items totaling $162.14 had been added to the $239.89 value of the initial inventory making the total value of his estate $402.03 before expenses. $150.00 and $10.00 had been received from the estates of Nathan Alger and Abiezer Alger Esq. respectively, interest received totaled $2.00 and there was $.14 cash in hand. The Administrator requested and received allowance in the amount of $137.72 for the following estate expenses: $5.16 in funeral charges, $34.50 for the deceased's last sickness, $20.11 paid to Dr. Caleb Swan, $6.47 paid to Dr. Noah Whitman, $1.70 in expenses for appraising the estate, $12.28 lost in the sale of the personal estate, $1.00 paid to Charles Hayden, $15.00 for a pair of gravestones and $41.50 for settling the estate.

The net value of the estate, after expenses, in 1833 was $264.31 which in today's dollars (2009) would be about $6,830. No mention of a wife, children or family members were found in the probate papers nor was there any indication of how the closing amount was disbursed.2

(Son) Census US 18709 September 1870John W. was enumerated on the 1870 census taken on 9 September 1870 in the household of his widowed father in Tracy, Barren County, Kentucky. He was 2 years old.1,2 
(Grandson) Will15 October 1872Identifying himself as Obadiah Britt Sr., probably because his nephew, Obadiah S. Britt, resided nearby, John's maternal grandfather prepared his will dated 15 October 1872 in Barren County, Kentucky. He named his only surviving son, Nelson Britt, his three surviving daughters, Sally Britt, Elizabeth (Britt) Houchens and Jane (Britt) Bewley, a grandson, John W. Woodcock, who was the son of his deceased daughter Ann Eliza (Britt) Woodcock, and a granddaughter, Artelia Britt, a daughter of his deceased son John Britt. Obadiah also mentioned his wife, Jane L. (Powell) Britt, although he did not name her, and mentioned Louisa (Harrison) Carver, the widowed mother of his daughter-in-law, Mary T. (Carver) Britt, wife of his son Nelson. He also named two neighbors with land adjacent to his, James H. Houchens, who was his grandnephew, and John Devasher. Signing as witnesses were John T. Rogers and Obadiah's brother, John W. Britt. Regarding his land, Obadiah made several mentions of a "creek", and we note that he was referring to Peter's Creek in Barren County, Kentucky.

To his grandson John W. Woodcock, his will gave 60 acres of the tract over the creek to be laid off next to John's 2nd cousin, James H. Houchens.3,4,5,6

Land Records*30 December 1843 On 30 December 1843, Robert and Susan Woodcock, for money already received, sold a tract of land on Peters Creek, Barren County, Kentucky, upon which Susan's brother, James D. Carver, then lived and that had been owned by their father, William Carver, in his life time, to John H. Page. Our transcription of the deed follows:

This indenture made and entered into this 30th day of December 1843 between Robert Woodcock and Susan Woodcock, his wife, of the County of Barren and State of Kentucky of the one part and John H. Page of the County of Allen and State aforesaid of the other part, Witnesseth that in and for the consideration of money heretofore received and $1.00 in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, we have bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain, sell and convey to the said John H. Page, all of our right, title and interest whatsoever to a certain tract of land on Peters Creek whereon James D. Carver now lives, it being the survey that William Carver owned in his life time, and bounded by the lands of John Lewis, Benjamin Littrell, Alexander L. Devasher and George W. Page, and the Creek. To have and to hold to the said Page and his heirs forever, and we bind ourselves, our heirs and executors to warrant and defend the title to the said land against the claim of all and every person or persons whatever. In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals the day and date above written.

The signatures of both Robert Woodcock and Susan Woodcock were sealed with their marks, and the deed was recorded in Barren County, Kentucky on 21 March 1844.3
