(Grantee) Land Records8 October 1824Samuel Whitney purchased about 62½ acres of land on Skaggs Creek, Barren County, Kentucky, from Thomas Powell and his wife Seney on 8 October 1824 for $250. The land had previously been owned by Isaac Tinsley Sr., the deceased father-in-law of both men, whose wives, Seney (Tinsley) Powell and Rhody (Tinsley) Whitney were sisters. The land in the transaction bordered the land of Isaac Tinsley's widow, Jane (Lee) Tinsley, the sisters' mother. Our transcription of the deed follows:

This indenture made and entered into this ___ day of October 1824 between Thomas Powell and Seney his wife of the County of Barren and State of Kentucky of the one part, and Samuel Whitney of the other part, Witnesseth that the said Thomas Powell and Seney his wife, for and in consideration of the sum of $250 current money to them in hand paid by the said Samuel Whitney at or before the unsealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge, have bargained, sold, transferred and delivered and, by these presents, bargain, sell, transfer and deliver unto the said Samuel Whitney one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County and State aforesaid, being part of the tract purchased by Isaac Tinsley, now deceased, of Thomas Elliott and bound as follows, viz:

Beginning at a stake in Mrs. Tinsley’s field, corner to Lot 4 and 5, running thence S 84 degrees W 57½ poles to an ash and beech, thence S 12 degrees E 140 poles to two hickories on Skaggs Creek, thence down the same, with the meanders thereof, to a hornbeam and hickory, N 34 degrees E 81 poles to a small beech, N 42 degrees W 35 poles to two beeches and sugar tree, thence N 42 degrees W 27 poles to three beeches, and thence N 5½ W 92 poles to the beginning, including by estimation 62½ acres more or less. To have and to hold the said land and premises with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging unto the said Samuel Whitney, his heirs and assigns forever.

In testimony whereof they have hereunto set their hands and seals, the day and year first in this indenture written. The signature of Thomas Powell was sealed and Seney Powell’s signature was sealed with her X mark. The deed was recorded on 6 October 1824 in Barren County, Kentucky.8 
(Neighbor) Land Records11 December 1847In a deed dated 11 December 1847, John Lewis, Obadiah Britt and Samuel Whitney were all identified as owners of land adjoining the land on Peters Creek, Barren County, Kentucky, being sold to John T. Rogers by James and Lucy Carver. The land had been in the possession of Lucy's father, Elisha Carver, at the time of his death.9 
Census US 1850*23 August 1850Rhody and Samuel Whitney were enumerated on the 1850 census taken on 23 August 1850 in Division 1, Barren County, Kentucky. Samuel was 57 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $678, and Rhody was 55 years of age.1 
(1st Neighbor) Land RecordsSeptember 1850Samuel Whitney was identified as a neighbor with adjoining boundary lines to both of the two parcels of land described in the resulting conveyances from a directive issued by the Circuit Court of Barren County, Kentucky, during the court's term in September 1850. In the case of James W. Gorin, Guardian for Elizabeth Carver, Martha Ann Carver, James L. Carver and Mary T. Carver, the minor children of Elisha Carver, deceased, against Louisa Carver, Elisha's widow, and John T. Rogers, defendants, the court found for the defendants. Gorin was directed by the Court to convey, on behalf of the children, their interest, exclusive of the widow's Dower, in the land in the Bill to John T. Rogers, purchaser under the decree. Our transcription of the indenture, recorded on 9 October 1851 in Barren County, follows:

This indenture witnesseth that, whereas the Barren Circuit Court at the September Term 1850 in the case of J. W. Gorin, Guardian for Elizabeth, Martha Ann, James L. and Mary T. Carver, against Louisa Carver and John T. Rogers, made an order directing James W. Gorin to convey the interest of said Elizabeth, Martha Ann, James L. and Mary T. Carver (exclusive of the widow’s Dower) in and to the land in the Bill and decree to John T. Rogers, purchaser under the decree aforesaid, for and on the part of the infant Wards aforesaid. Said land is described in a survey, that was filed in the case, that was made by James Scrivner on the 25th and 26th February 1848 as surveyed when the Dower of said Louisa Carver was assigned to her.

Beginning at two poplars on the south bank of Peters Creek and Corner to Samuel Whitney’s, thence with Whitney’s line S 47 W, S 50 W 40 poles to a sugar tree and beech, thence S 12½ W (south) 27 poles to a beech on a branch, thence S 20½ W (S 18 W) to a large poplar, thence S 6 E 54 poles to two beeches and a poplar on a branch, thence up the branch S 55 W 54 poles to a poplar and beech, thence S 6 E 61 poles to a hickory and two beeches near a road, thence S 58½ E 50 poles to a hickory and two beech stumps in a clearing, thence N 81 E 176 poles to a small white oak, beech and dogwood on Graham’s line, thence N 23½ W 39 poles to a beech and sugar tree, N 53 E 27 poles to two beeches, N 20 E 26 poles to a black gum, N 77 W 48 poles to a small beech, N 31 W 78 poles to a stake above the head of a spring, N 37 W 42 poles to a sugar tree, corner to Obadiah Britt Jr. on the bank of the Creek, thence down the Creek with its meanderings to the beginning, containing 248 acres nearly.

The Dower is bounded as follows: Beginning at two poplars, corner of Samuel Whitney, on the bank of Peters Creek, thence S 57 W, 50 W 40 poles to a sugar tree and beech, S 12½ W (south) 27 poles to a beech on a branch, Whitney’s corner, thence S 48 ½ E 134 poles to a poplar, beech and ash on the hill side, S 60 E 84 poles to two beeches on a ridge and corner to the whole tract, N 20 E 56 poles to a black gum, N 77 W 44 poles to a small beech, N 31 W 78 poles to a beech (down) at the head of a spring, N 32 W 42 poles to a sugar tree, Britt’s corner, on the Creek, thence with the Creek to the beginning, containing 76 acres.

Now, in consideration of the premises, I James W. Gorin, Commissioner, do hereby on the part of said infants, convey their interests in the above-described land (exclusive of the widow’s Dower) to John T. Rogers and agree, on the part of said infants, forever to warrant and defend the title in the interest aforesaid to said bounds to said John T. Rogers his heirs and assigns forever against the claim or claims of all persons claiming under them, but this warrant is only to extend to the assets descended to said infants from their father.

The order was given under the hand and seal of James W. Gorin as Commissioner on the 9th day of October 1851, and was recorded in Barren County, Kentucky on 24 March 1852.10

His will gave each of the boys two hundred pounds and no more, having already been at considerable charge for their maintenance and education; and in the case that either of them were to die in his minority, then the survivor was to have the whole sum of four hundred pounds, to be paid as they, respectively, attained full age. The Reverend Ebenezer Turell, the boys' uncle, was appointed Executor of their grandfather's estate and was bonded for £3000.3

Biographical Info*Daniel was a shiftless fellow, who would not support his wife and children. In fact, it appears he deserted them only a few years after his marriage. His trip to Nova Scotia as a youth in the army must have given him a great liking for that province, as he turned up there, in Halifax, working as a carpenter many years later, having lost all contact with his sons long since. It was probably a good thing, for they became fine men, whereas Daniel, himself, was the black sheep of the family in that period.3 
Death*1757He died in late 1757 in Halifax, Nova Scotia Province, Canada.3

Biographical Info*31 December 1723Pelatiah was a brilliant young man who married into the leading family of Maine, and very early in life became an officer in the Army. He was the first Whittemore to be termed a "gentleman", and had every prospect of an eminently successful career. Instead, the records show that what happened is just one more instance of a promising life ruined by excessive drinking. In Pelatiah's case, it forced his lovely wife to leave him, taking their children and returning to her family in Kittery Point, Maine. The unfortunate Pelatiah remained in Boston where the court records show many lawsuits for debt against him. From a "gentleman" and "merchant", his last court case, on 31 December 1723, called him an "accountant", and he was sent to debtor's prison on complaint of a tavern-keeper.2

Research Notes* The Whittemore Family in America source noted they were, of necessity, rather vague about Samuel. Soon after receiving the legacy of £200 from his grandfather's estate, he married, but had no children of record. The Whittemore researchers found no proof it was this Samuel who went to New Jersey after losing his first wife, there to remarry and raise a family. However, inasmuch as his elder brother had removed from Boston southward -- and been successful in so doing -- plus the fact that he was the only Samuel in the family then of marriageable age not positively accounted for, made them feel quite sure it was he.2
