Thomas Thornbury1

b. circa 1700, d. 1742
Father*Edward Thornbrough1,2 b. b 1680, d. b 20 Dec 1734
Name-SpellingsSeveral variations of the spelling of the THORNBOROUGH surname have been found in our research of this family. Other spellings in early colonial times in America included THORNBURY, THORNBERRY, THORNBRUGH and Thornbrough, as well as some others. In some records, an "e" was inserted between "Thorn" and the remainder, spelling the name as THORNEBOROUGH or THORNEBURGH. When speaking the name, the ending was silent, which resulted in all of the different spellings of the name sounding the same to the listener who heard Thornbro, Thornburo or Thornbra. From the mid to late 1700s, the surname began to appear in our research as THORNBURG or THORNBURGH, the spellings that are still the most common today.3
Birth*circa 1700Thomas Thornbrough was probably born near Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland, and was likely the oldest of his father's children. The fact that he was a taxpayer as early as 1722 indicates he was probably born at least as early as 1700.4,1
Taxation*1722He was listed as a taxpayer in Birmingham Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, in1722.1
Occupation*At the time of his marriage in 1729, Thomas was a weaver4
Residence* and resided in Thornbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.4
Marriage*11 October 1729He married first Charity Davis, daughter of John Davis and Mary __?__, on 11 October 1729 at a Birmingham Meeting House, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Their marriage record stated that they had the consent of their parents to marry, however their parents were not named. Members of the couple's families who attended the ceremony and signed the marriage certificate included Walter Thornbury, Edward Thornbury and Elizabeth Thornbury, siblings of the groom, Mary Davis, mother of the bride, Abraham Davis, John Davis Jr., Daniel Davis, Isaac Davis, Ann Davis and Mary Davis, all siblings of the bride.4,1
(Husband) Death1731Thomas became a widower when Charity (Davis) Thornbury died around 1731.3,1
Marriage*1733He married second, as her first husband, Elizabeth Woodward, daughter of Richard Woodward and Deborah Stanfield, about 1733. The Putman source identified, incorrectly we believe, his second wife as Sarah Woodward, daughter of John and Mary (___?___) Woodward.5,6
(Son) Will13 April 1734Thomas was named as a beneficiary in his father's will dated 13 April 1734 in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.7,2,8
Death*1742He died in 1742 in Chester County.1
