Six children were enumerated with them in 1870. John A., William C. and Phillip C. were ages 10, 9 and 7 years, respectively, and had all attended school within the census year; Anna E. and Albert A. were ages 5 and 3 years, respectively, and Charles S. was one year old. Albert's daughter from his first marriage, Mary Jane, had married John W. Hurley in 1864. Although we haven't identified them on the 1870 census, they were enumerated with their daughter, Olive, whom was called Ollie, on the 1880 census in Jackson, Howard County, Indiana.7,8 
(Wife) Death25 September 1898Mary became a widow when Albert Barkdull died on 25 September 1898 at age 71.6 
Census US 1900*5 June 1900Mary A. Barkdull was enumerated as the head of her household on the 1900 census taken on 5 June 1900 in Wildcat, Tipton County, Indiana. She was 65 years of age, a widow, able to read, write and speak English, and owned her house free of mortgage. Two sons were enumerated with her in 1990. Her youngest son, Jesse E., was 25 years of age, able to read, write and speak English, and worked as a Day Laborer. Her eldest son, John A., was in his mother's household with his wife and four children. John was 41 years of age and an Invalid, and his wife, Anna, was 26 years of age. They were both able to read and speak English, although neither was able to write. They had been married for six years and Anna had given birth to four children, all of whom were living and enumerated with them. Otto J. and Goldie A. were ages 5 and 4 years, respectively, and had attended school within the census year; Grace was 2 years old; and an unnamed infant son was seven months old.9

(Brother-in-Law) Biographical InfoHis brother-in-law, General James B. McPherson, had succeeded and excelled throughout his life, ultimately becoming famous. Biographical information, written by William Bjornstad, is included on General McPherson's Find a Grave Memorial page, and with help from Wikipedia, some of the things we've learned about his life and death follow:

He was a Major General for the Union during the American Civil War, and served as the commander of the Army of Tennessee from March 1864 until his death in July of that year. He was the second-highest-ranking Union officer killed in action during the war.

He was the son of a farmer and at a young age worked on the family farm and in his father's blacksmith business. When his father, who had a history of mental illness, became unable to work, James, at age 13, took a job at a store to help support the family.

His maternal grandmother, Lydia Slocum, taught school in a little log building and it was in that log house that "little Jimmy", beginning at the age of four years, received his elementary school instruction with his grandma for his teacher. In bad weather, he was carried there on the back of his father. For his secondary, or high school education, Jimmy attended Norwalk Academy in Norwalk, Huron County, Ohio. In 1849 he received an appointment to attend the US Military Academy at West Point, New York, and graduated at the top of his class in 1853 with a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. He remained at West Point for a year, serving as an Assistant Professor of Practical Engineering, before receiving his first assignment to improve the New York Harbor in New York City, New York. In 1857 he was assigned to San Francisco, California to work on improving fortifications in the area.

After the outbreak of the American Civil War in April 1861, he requested a transfer to the Eastern U.S. and was assigned to Boston, Massachusetts for service in the Corps of Engineers as a captain. The following November he applied for a position on the staff of Major General Henry W. Halleck, the commander of the Department of Missouri, and was sent to St. Louis where he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel and assigned as chief engineer on the staff of Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant. In 1862 he saw action at Fort Henry, the Battle of Fort Donelson, and the Battle of Shiloh, and in May of that year was promoted by Grant to the rank of brigadier general. In the fall of 1862, he commanded an infantry brigade during the campaigns around Corinth and Iuka, Mississippi, and his superior performance earned him a promotion to the rank of major general in October. The following December Grant's Army of the Tennessee was reorganized, and he received command of the 17th Corps and played a key part in Grant's Vicksburg, Mississippi campaign in late 1862 and 1863. In the course of the campaign, he actively participated in the Union victories in Mississippi at Raymond, Jackson, Champion Hill, and the Siege of Vicksburg. After Vicksburg surrendered on July 4, 1863, he remained in Mississippi to conduct minor operations against Confederate forces there.

In March 1864 Grant made him commander of the Army of Tennessee and he moved with General William Tecumseh Sherman in his march through Georgia that began in May of that year. Confronted by Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston's strong position at Rocky Face Ridge and Dalton, Georgia, Sherman dispatched him south to Snake Creek Gap and from this undefended gap, he was to strike at Resaca, Georgia, and sever the railroad which was supplying the Confederates to the north. On May 9, 1864, he became concerned that Johnston would move south and cut him off, and as a result withdrew to the gap and failed to take Resaca despite the fact the city was lightly defended. Sherman later blamed his cautiousness on May 9 for preventing a great Union victory at that time. On June 27, 1864, his forces took part in the defeat at Kennesaw Mountain.

On July 17, 1864, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, who had become frustrated with General Johnston's strategy of maneuver and retreat, replaced him with Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood, a boyhood friend and West Point classmate of McPherson. With the Union armies closing in on Atlanta, on July 20, 1864, Hood first attacked George Henry Thomas's Army of the Cumberland at Peachtree Creek, north of Atlanta, hoping to drive Thomas back before other forces could come to his aid. The attack failed. Then Hood's cavalry reported that the left flank of McPherson's Army of the Tennessee, east of Atlanta, was unprotected. Hood visualized a glorious replay of Jackson's famous flank attack at Chancellorsville and ordered a new attack. McPherson had advanced his troops into Decatur, Georgia, and from there they moved onto high ground on Bald Hill overlooking Atlanta. Sherman believed that the Confederates had been defeated and were evacuating; however, McPherson rightly believed that they were moving to attack the Union from the left and rear. On July 22, 1864, however, while they were discussing this new development, four Confederate divisions under Lt. Gen. William J. Hardee flanked attached Union Maj. Gen. Grenville Dodge's 16th Corps. While McPherson was riding his horse to the sound of guns to warn his old 17th Corps, with only his orderly as an escort, a line of Confederate skirmishers appeared, yelling "Halt!". McPherson raised his hand to his head as if to remove his hat, but suddenly wheeled his horse, attempting to escape. The Confederates opened fire and mortally wounded McPherson in the back. When the Confederate troops approached and asked his orderly who the downed officer was, the aide replied "Sir, it is General McPherson. You have killed the best man in our army."5,7,8
