(Father-in-Law) Relocation1777In the summer of 1777, Isaac moved with his daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Jonathan Slocum, and their nine children from Rhode Island to Pennsylvania. The family settled near Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, on land that had been inhabited by various tribes of Native American Indians for generations.1 
(Grandfather) Religion The Slocum family were Quakers and treated the Indians with great kindness, and in the Wyoming Massacre of July 3, 1778, they were not harmed. Giles Slocum, Jonathan's eldest son, however, had fought against the Indians in that battle of the American Revolution, and when this became known to the Indians they decided to retaliate.1 
(Grandfather) Life Changing Event2 November 1778His granddaughter, Frances Slocum, was stolen from the family's home in Pennsylvania by Delaware Indians when she was five years old. " On 2 November 1778, three Delaware Indians stealthily approached the Slocum dwelling, which stood in the edge of a piece of timber. Sometime before this Nathan Kingsley, a neighbor, had been captured by the Indians and his wife and two sons were staying with the Slocums. The men were away from home, but the two Kingsley boys were engaged in sharpening a knife on a grindstone which stood near the door. The elder boy. a lad some fourteen years of age, wore a soldier's coat, which it is supposed angered the Indians, as one of them quickly leveled his gun and shot the boy dead. Alarmed by the report of the gun, Mrs. Slocum rushed to the door and saw the Indian scalping the Kingsley boy with the knife he had been grinding. With some of her children she fled to the woods, while her daughter, Mary, about ten years old, carried Joseph, the youngest of the family. Little Frances, five years of age, and a lame brother, Ebenezer, concealed themselves under the stairway.

"After the Indians had ransacked the house and were about to depart, one of them chanced to notice the little girl's feet protruding from beneath the stairway. She and her brother were dragged from their hiding place, and with the two children and the surviving Kingsley boy the Indians started for the woods, hoping to make their escape before an alarm could reach the Wilkes-Barre fort, which was but a short distance away.

"When Mrs. Slocum saw the Indians carrying away her children, the mother love triumphed over fear and she came forth from her place of concealment in the underbrush to plead for her little ones. The savages seemed to enjoy her distress and showed no intention of releasing either of the children until the frantic mother pointed to the boy's feet and exclaimed: 'See, the child is lame; he can do thee no good!' The Indian let go of Ebenezer, but seized little Frances, threw her over his shoulder and, with his two companions, hurried toward the timber. The last sight the grief-stricken mother ever had of her daughter was the tearstained face looking back over the shoulder of her captor, one hand brushing away the auburn curls from her eyes and the other outstretched toward her mother, the childish voice calling 'mamma! mamma!' until its echoes were lost in the forest."

Death*16 December 1778Six weeks after his granddaughter Frances was stolen, Isaac Tripp was dead. He and his son-in-law, Jonathan Slocum, were both killed by Indians on 16 December 1778 in Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. They had been feeding cattle in the meadow, in sight of the fort, when they were fired upon. Jonathan, who was 45 years of age, was shot dead, and Isaac, who was about 76 years of age and called "an aged man", was wounded, then speared and tomahawked. Both men were scalped. Jonathan's son, William, who was not quite 17 years old, had also been working with the men in the meadow. He was wounded in the heel by a spent ball, escaped and gave the alarm, although too late to catch the perpetrators. The Indians had already retreated to their hiding place in the mountain.1,4,5,2

Census US 1920*10 January 1920Frances and Jacob H. Tripp were enumerated on the 1920 census taken on 10 January 1920 at 111 Walnut Street, Binghamton, Broome County, New York. Jacob was 70 years of age and worked for wages as a caretaker at a reservoir, and Frances was 62 years of age. They rented their house. The couple's daughter, Lena M. and her husband, Fred W. Cross, were enumerated with Lena's parents in 1920. Fred was 42 years of age and worked for wages as a finisher in a jewelry store, and Lena was also 42 years of age and worked for wages as a saleswoman in a department store. Frances's sister, Ida J. Wood, was also enumerated in the Tripp household in 1920. She was 53 years of age, single, and worked for wages doing housework for a private family. Everyone in the Tripp household was able to read, write and to speak English.1

(Mother) Historical Note Because of the instability, change and uncertainty during the American Revolutionary War and, as the History of Miami County noted, "the unsettled conditions upon the frontier, immediate pursuit was out of the question, and it is not surprising that no efforts were made to recover the little captive."1 
(Wife) Death16 December 1778 On 16 December 1778, six weeks after her daughter Frances was stolen, Ruth became a widow when both her husband and father were killed by Indians. (Executor) Will21 April 1876Godfrey Knepper, in his will dated 21 April 1876 in Stark County, Ohio, named Jacob M. Trubey to be his sole executor and he named the following beneficiaries: his beloved wife, Mary, his deceased son, John, whose death left five heirs who were Godfrey's grandchildren, named Grant, William, John, Jennie and George, his daughter Sarah, who had married to John Amos, his daughter Lucy Ann, his son William, and his daughters, Melissa and Minerva. His will clarified that John's five children were to count as one heir, and that with the five other heirs Godfrey had named, there were a total of six heirs who should each have one equal share. His will went on to state that he had yet another daughter, Elizabeth, who was married to Adam Broiler, and that he had loaned her $305, and that the forgiveness of that debt was to be Elizabeth's total bequest. And to the Broliers son named Godfrey Broiler, his will bequeathed $500 plus the interest it earned until young Godfrey reached the age of 21 years, and willed that John Baltzly be appointed guardian for young Godfrey. His will appointed Jacob M. Trubey his sole executor.3 
(Executor) Probate3 December 1877Godfrey Knepper's estate was opened for probate on 3 December 1877 and Jacob was appointed Executor, as requested in Godfrey's will. The estate papers, among other things, told us that beginning on 22 October 1877, newspapers and other methods of notification had been published and posted stating that an "Inventory and Notice of Appraisement" of the estate and property of Godfrey Knepper, late of Stark County, deceased, would be taken at his late residence in Sugar Creek township on 27 October 1877 and continue from day to day thereafter if necessary until completed. The executor informed the court on 3 December that, additionally, the widow Mary Knepper, William Knepper, Elizabeth Broiler, Melissa Trubey and Minerva Knepper, heirs-at-law who resided in Stark County, had all been duly notified according to law. (We found no mention of the deceased son John Knepper's widow, Sarah C. Knepper, or her five children who were heirs in the will, or of his daughters, Sarah Amos, or Lucy Ann Heckard, all of whom were residing in Indiana in 1877.)4 
(Executor) Estate Distribution18 January 1879A page in Knepper's probate package titled "Godfrey Knepper's Estate", dated 18 January 1879, was identified as the executor's partial accounting of receipts and payments to and from the estate. (4th Daughter-in-Law) Land Records1 August 1839After her father-in-law's death, Mary's husband and his four brothers, the five sons of John T. Belcher Sr., inherited equal parts of a specific tract or parcel of land consisting of 80 acres in Orange County, Indiana that their father had owned at the time of his death. Subsequently, each of his four oldest sons sold his inherited share in that land, which would have amounted to about 16 acres each, to their youngest brother. A deed dated 1 August 1839 in Orange County, Indiana, described the transaction, and we note that the description of the 80 acres of land in the deed is not the same as the description of the 80 acres of land their father purchased in 1837 as a Land Patent from the United States Federal Government. Belcher Sr., late of Orange County, deceased, each of the County of Orange and State of Indiana, of the one part, and John Belcher Jr. of the County and State aforesaid, of the other part, Witnesseth that the said James Belcher and Jesse Belcher and Joseph Belcher and Berry Belcher, for and in consideration of the sum of $88.89 to them in had paid by the said John Belcher Jr., the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge, hath granted, bargained, sold, conveyed and confirmed and doth by these presents grant, bargain, sell, convey and confirm unto the said John Belcher Jr., his heirs and assigns forever, their part of a certain tract or parcel of land in the County of Orange aforesaid, it being the west half of the North west quarter of Section No. 25 in Township No. 1 South of Range No. 2 west, estimated to contain 80 acres, be the same more or less, together with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging, and the reversions, remainders and profits thereof, and all the estate, title and interest of the said James Belcher and Jesse Belcher and Joseph Belcher and Berry Belcher in and to their part of the 80 acres aforesaid, to have and to hold the premises aforesaid, with all the appurtenances, to the only proper use, benefit and behoof of the said John Belcher Jr., his heirs and assigns forever, and the said James Belcher and Jesse Belcher and Joseph Belcher and Berry Belcher for themselves, their heirs, executors and administrators doth covenant and agree to and with the said John Belcher Jr., his heirs and assigns, that they, the said James Belcher, Jesse Belcher, Joseph Belcher and Berry Belcher, is lawfully seized in fee of the premises aforesaid, that they are free from all incumbrance and that they have good right to sell and convey the same in manner and form aforesaid, and further that they and their heirs, executors and administrators shall and will warrant and defend the said premises to the said John Belcher Jr., his heirs and assigns, against the lawful claims of themselves and their heirs and also against the lawful claim or claims of all and every other person or persons whatsoever, and the said Nancy Belcher, the wife of the said James Belcher, and Sarah Belcher, the wife of the said Jesse Belcher, and Ruth Belcher, the wife of the said Joseph Belcher, and Mary Belcher, the wife of the said Berry Belcher, doth hereby relinquish all their right and title of dower of and in the premises aforesaid.

In witness whereof the said James Belcher and Nancy Belcher his wife and the said Jesse Belcher and Sarah Belcher his wife and the Joseph Belcher and Ruth Belcher his wife and Berry Belcher and Mary Belcher his wife have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year above written.

Jonathan Palmer, Justice of the Peace in and for the County of Orange, wrote that the within named James Belcher and Nancy Belcher his wife and Jesse Belcher and Sarah Belcher his wife and Joseph Belcher and Ruth Belcher his wife and Berry Belcher and Mary Belcher his wife appeared before him personally on 1 August 1839 and acknowledged that they signed, sealed and delivered the written indenture as their act and deed for the purposes therein specified and the said Nancy Belcher and the said Sarah Belcher and the said Ruth Belcher and the said Mary Belcher being at full age and being by the Justice of Peace duly examined separate and apart from their said husbands, and the contents of the said indenture being made known to them declared that they relinquished all their right and title of dower in and to the lands and tenements in the written indenture set forth and that they voluntarily and of their own free will and accord and without any coercion or compulsion of their said husbands signed, sealed and delivered the said indenture as their act and deed for the purposes aforesaid.

Jonathan Palmer, J.P. signed and sealed his name to the document on 1 August 1839, and the indenture was filed on 8 September 1839 and recorded on 14 September 1839 in Orange County, Indiana.9,6
 
Census US 1840*1840Mary Belcher was likely enumerated on the 1840 census in the household of her husband, Berry Belcher, in Jackson Township, Orange County, Indiana. Their household consisted of ten people, three of whom were employed in agriculture. Berry would have been the one male between the ages of 30 thru 39 years, and his second wife, Mary, whom he married in 1838, would have been the one female between the ages of 20 thru 29 years. Eight children were enumerated with them in 1840, four males and four females. Two of the males were under the age of 5 years; one male was between the ages of 10 thru 14 years; and one male was between the ages of 15 thru 19 years. On the female side, one was under the age of 5 years; two females were between the ages of 5 thru 9 years; and the fourth female was between the ages of 10 thru 14 years.

Our research indicates that the five oldest children would have been from Berry's first marriage with Jane (Trimble) Belcher, and the two youngest from his marriage with Mary Ann. That leaves us with one of the children recorded in the Belcher household on the 1840 census that we have not identified. These are seven of the eight children we believe we have correctly named:

Berry's eldest son from his first marriage, Moses, who would have been the one male between the ages of 15 thru 19, and Berry's second son from his first marriage, Jesse, who would have been the one male between the ages of 10 thru 14, were likely the two others, in addition to their father, who were employed in agriculture; Berry's eldest daughter from his first marriage, Martha Jane, would have been the one female between the ages of 10 and 14; Berry's second daughter from his first marriage, Lucinda, would have been one of the two females between the ages of 5 thru 9, and Berry's youngest daughter from his first marriage, Rebecca, would have been the one female under the age of 5 in 1840. From Berry's second marriage with Mary, their two young sons, John and Thomas were both under the age of 5 years. We don't know who the identity of the second female who was recorded as between the ages of 5 thru 9 years. It's possible she was another daughter, who died before the 1850 census was taken, of Berry with his first wife, Jane.10 
Census US 1850*27 August 1850Mary and Berry Belcher were enumerated on the 1850 census taken on 27 August 1850 in Patoka Township, Crawford County, Indiana. Berry was recorded as 40 years of age, although he was closer to 50, and a farmer with real estate valued at $150. Mary was age 31 and not able to read or write. They were enumerated with nine children in 1850. Lucinda and Rebecca, two of Berry's daughters from his first marriage, were ages 17 and 14 years, respectively; and John W., Thomas, James, Sarah, George, Jesse and Nancy, seven children from Berry and Mary's marriage, were ages 11, 10, 9, 7, 5, 4 years, and one year, respectively. Berry's eldest son from his first marriage, Moses Jackson Belcher, was enumerated with the family of Berry's brother, Joseph Belcher, in Calhoun County, Illinois in 1850.11

Court Action*3 December 1953 On 3 December 1953, according to a report published that day in in The Kokomo Tribune, Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana, John Edward Tucker was charged with petit larceny for the theft of a turkey from a local super market. He was described as a Kokomo laborer, age 40, of 811 N. Buckeye Street and the father of four children. The police reported he admitted stealing the turkey "because my family was hungry." Tucker told the officers he had gone to the store to purchase a fifth of wine for his landlord and, while in the store, saw the turkey and concealed it under his coat. After walking to the check-out point and paying for the wine, he walked out of the store before being stopped by the manager, who questioned him about what he had under his coat.8 
Divorce*April 1955Viola Tucker filed for divorce from John Tucker in Howard County, Indiana, and when the case was heard by the court in April 1955, the judge dismissed the case. The couple did separate, though, and were probably divorced, not much later. Viola remarried in 1957.9,10

Census US 1860*28 July 1860Nancy and Edmund Lankford were enumerated on the 1860 census taken on 28 July 1860 in Patoka, Crawford County, Indiana. Edmond was 60 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $1,000 and a personal estate valued at $263, and Nancy was 50 years of age. Neither was able to read or write. Seven of their children were enumerated with them in 1860. Mary A. was 23 years of age and recorded as "idiotic"; Larkin, Henry and Nancy were ages 17, 15 and 13 years, respectively; and Eliza, James and Catherine were ages 10, 8 and 5 years, respectively. In the first household before theirs on the same census page, Catherine (Hawhee) King Lankford Enlow, the widow of Edmond's brother, Walker Lankford, was enumerated with her third husband, Henry H. Enlow, and seven children. Catherine and Henry had both been widowed twice, and the children were a combination of the children from their previous marriages. Three of Catherine's daughters were Edmond's biological nieces, and one of her sons was Edmond's biological nephew.8

Edmund was 83 years of age and farming, and Nancy was 71 years of age and keeping house. The health for both of them was recorded as well. Enumerated on the same census page were several households of their extended family members, and the page before lists an Enlow family. The immediate household before theirs on the same census page was that of their eldest daughter, Rachel, and her husband, Henry Highfill, and in the immediate household after Edmund and Nancy, their youngest daughter, Catharine, was enumerated as a sister-in-law in the household of Lucinda and James C. Highfill. James was a half-brother to Henry Highfill, whose wife Rachel was Catherine's oldest sister. The next household on the page was that of Elisha J. Highfill, who was a brother of James and a half-brother of Henry. At the top of the same census page, Sarah E. (Belcher Hollen) Lankford, widow of Edmund and Nancy's deceased son, Larkin Lankford, was enumerated with her children in the household of her mother and stepfather, Minerva and Marcum Hollen.9,10,11,12,13

Brick Wall The birthdates, and even an accurate birth order, for the brothers LANKFORD, Larkin, Benjamin, Isaac, Edmund, Walker, John, Stephen, Richard and Jackson, remain questions to us. On the 1810 census, their parents had six sons, two born before the date of the 1800 census and four born between 1800 and 1810; and on the 1820 census, the family included nine sons, three born between 1797, the year their parents married, and 1804, two born between 1805 and 1810, and four born between 1810 and 1820. There was also a probable daughter, born between1810 and 1820, on the 1820 census.

The children's mother was recorded as over 45 years of age on the 1820 census, and would have been nearing the end of her child-bearing years. The age of her youngest son, Jackson, was consistently recorded, within one year, on the 1850 through 1880 censuses, estimating his year of birth between 1822 and 1823, which means he would not have been born in time to be included on the 1820 census. Many of her younger sons, according to the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses, reported being born in or about 1800. While twins are possible, we hesitate to jump to that conclusion without some evidence to support it. We know nothing about the family’s daughter or daughters, and only the 1810 Franklin County, Kentucky census has given us enough confidence to conclude that the parent's' first six children were sons.

So, bottom line, because we can't be sure of the brothers' years of birth, we've hit a Brick Wall when we try to decide the order of their births. Using the limited and inconsistent information obtained in our research, we've chosen to provide an arbitrary birth order we feel certain needs to be corrected. John Hooper Tuft1

(Kinsman) Will2 June 1803John Hooper Tuft, who was described as a kinsman of Glocester, Rhode Island, was named as a beneficiary in the will of John Hooper dated 2 June 1803 in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Tuft's bequests included John's silver watch, silver spun shoe buckles, knee buckles, stock buckles and sleeve buttons, all of which were silver.1
