(Second Wife) Research NotesOur research indicates that her husband, John R. McClure, may have had children with at least two or three different wives before 1871, although we note that other researchers have reported that Emmeline M. __?__ and Elizabeth __?__ were the same person. We don't believe that's true, and our thinking has developed from the following pieces of information: Emmeline, on the 1856 Iowa State census, was reported to be 17 years old with her year of birth estimated as 1839 and her place of birth reported as Ohio. Their son, George, was one year old on the 1856 census, and when George married for the second time in 1894 he reported that "Elizabeth Howard" was his mother's maiden name. On the 1860 Federal census, George was not with his parents, and we have not found his mother, not Emmeline nor Elizabeth. His father, John R. McClure, however, and John's brother, Cortland D. McClure, were enumerated together in California on the 1860 Federal census, and without any wives or children. John's son, George, was enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census with the family of Lewis and Susannah Smith in Big Creek, Black Hawk County, Iowa. We have not identified a relationship between the Smiths and George McClure, who was 6 years old on that 1860 census. On the 1870 census, John R. McClure and his wife, Elizabeth, were enumerated in Cedar, Black Hawk County, Iowa with four children, including George and his sister Carrie A., whom we know grew to adulthood and were heirs in their father's 1898 will. John's wife, Elizabeth, in the 1870 census, was recorded as 33 years of age with her year of birth estimated as 1837 and her place of birth recorded, we believe, as Canada. John's daughter, Carrie, was born about 1868, and on her1929 death record, her mother's maiden name, provided by Carrie's husband, was "______ Brisbane" and was reportedly born in Canada. Records tell us that in 1879, John married Emma M. (Airhart) Hicks, who was, we think, his third wife, if not his fourth. By the 1880 census, George was married and Carrie was enumerated with the family of her father's brother, Cortland D. McClure, in Portland, Oregon. By 1882, John R. McClure was in Pendleton, Umatilla County, Oregon operating his contractors and builders business. Then, after Emma M. (Airhart) Hicks McClure's death in 1891, John married as his last wife, Marcia A. (Van Ness) Van Valkenburg Downing, who had been widowed in 1890. They lived in Pendleton until their respective deaths, hers in April 1900, and John's in June 1900.2,3,1,4,5,6 
Birth1837Elizabeth __?__ was born about 1837, probably in Canada. Her place of birth on the 1870 census was recorded by the census taker as "L C", probably meaning lower Canada, and both of her parents were recorded on the 1870 census as foreign born. Ancestry's transcription of the initials reported her place of birth as South Carolina, which we do not believe is correct.1

John was 40 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $5,700 and a personal estate valued at $1,655, and Elizabeth was 33 years of age and keeping house. Four children were enumerated with them in 1870. George, William S. and Selina A. were ages 15, 11 and 9 years, respectively, and had all attended school within the census year; and Carrie A. was 2 years old.1

On the 1860 Federal census, George was not with his parents, and we have not found his mother, not Emmeline nor Elizabeth. His father, John R. McClure, however, and John's brother, Cortland D. McClure, were enumerated together in California on the 1860 Federal census, and without any wives or children. John's son, George, was enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census with the family of Lewis and Susannah Smith in Big Creek, Black Hawk County, Iowa. We have not identified a relationship between the Smiths and George McClure, who was 6 years old on that 1860 census. On the 1870 census, John R. McClure and his wife, Elizabeth, were enumerated in Cedar, Black Hawk County, Iowa with four children, including George and his sister Carrie A., whom we know grew to adulthood and were heirs in their father's 1898 will. John's wife, Elizabeth, in the 1870 census, was recorded as 33 years of age with her year of birth estimated as 1837 and her place of birth recorded, we believe, as Canada. John's daughter, Carrie, was born about 1868, and on her1929 death record, her mother's maiden name, provided by Carrie's husband, was "______ Brisbane" and was reportedly born in Canada. Records tell us that in 1879, John married Emma M. (Airhart) Hicks, who was, we think, his third wife, if not his fourth. By the 1880 census, George was married and Carrie was enumerated with the family of her father's brother, Cortland D. McClure, in Portland, Oregon. By 1882, John R. McClure was in Pendleton, Umatilla County, Oregon operating his contractors and builders business. Then, after Emma M. (Airhart) Hicks McClure's death in 1891, John married as his last wife, Marcia A. (Van Ness) Van Valkenburg Downing, who had been widowed in 1890. They lived in Pendleton until their respective deaths, hers in April 1900, and John's in June 1900.1,2,3,4,5,6

Marriage*before 10 April 1950Two records indicate that a woman whose name we know only as Gussie E. __?__ may have married, as his second wife, Cail F. Friel, son of Harry Friel and Marie C. Stouffer, before 10 April 1950. In his obituary of July 1951, his wife's name was reported as Gussie, and in the April 1950 census, Gussie E. Friel, age 30 and married, was enumerated at 205 E Avenue, National City, the address of Cail's mother and stepfather, Marie and Joseph K. Stouffer. 205 E Avenue, National City, was also Cail's address on his June 1950 Veteran's Compensation Application, and reported as his address in his obituary at the time of his death in July 1951. In the April 1950 census, at a different address in National City, Cail's first wife, Jeanne A. Friel, was enumerated with their six surviving daughters as the head of her household. Jeanne was recorded in the census as "separated" from her husband.1 
Census US 1950*13 April 1950Gussie E. Friel was enumerated as a "Person Not Assigned to Dwelling Units" on the 1950 census taken on 13 April 1950 at 205 E Avenue, National City, San Diego County, California. She was married, 30 years of age, and worked for government wages at a Guest House and at Fitzsimons General Hospital doing housework. Her information was recorded on the last page submitted by that census taker who wrote that the work was incomplete and contained estimated information provided by neighbors or had been skipped altogether. An "editor" for the census taker wrote that she had completed the information for some of the people from her "own knowledge". In Gussie's case, although her address was recorded as 205 E Avenue, she was not included on the same page of the census as the other members of that household who were her husband Cail's mother and stepfather, Marie and Joseph K. Stouffer, Cail's sister, Blanche E. (Friel) Hunter, and nephew, Dennis E. Hunter.1,2

(Wife) ObituaryMrs. Gussie Friel was identified as the wife of Cail Francis Friel in his obituary published in the National City, California, newspaper the day of his funeral. Nathaniel was a descendant of Roger Conant, who came to New England in 1623 and lived at Plymouth, Nantasket, Cape Ann and afterwards at Salem where he built the first house about 1626. Roger Conant died in Beverly in 1679 in his 89th year.1

(Niece) Estate and Land19 October 1802The warrant to divide and distribute the homestead farm of the deceased Ephraim Leach was returned by Daniel Tolman, Ephraim Fobes and Daniel Fobes to the Honorable Joshua Thomas in Plymouth County on 19 October 1802. The committee's written report outlined the process they used, the details of each share, and how they were distributed among the recipients. The committee completed their return of the warrant by stating to the court that they had taken a view of the homestead that Ephraim Leach, late of Bridgewater, died seized of and, pursuant to the warrant and as directed by Judge Joshua Thomas, had divided the homestead agreeably and assigned and set off to the heirs of the several persons mentioned, their respective heirs' shares, to be held separately. The document was filed with the court on 6 April 1805.

Hannah, who was deceased, received a one quarter share of the total, which had been designated for the heirs of Ephraim's deceased sister Mercy (Leach) Peterson. It contained about six acres and one half and was assigned to the legal representatives of Hannah __?__, described as a deceased niece of testator Ephraim Leach. No surname was provided, and she was not identified as Mercy (Leach) Peterson's daughter, although she may have been. Hannah's share began at a stake and stones at the northeast corner of the share assigned to the heirs of the testator Ephraim Leach's brother David, and from there northerly about 58 rods to a stake and stones standing in the northeast corner of the farm in Ebenezer Leach's range; from there westerly by and in that range about 17 rods to a stake and stones standing in the range of Deacon Daniel Leach at the northwest corner bounds of the above farm, and from there in Daniel Leach's range about 58 rods to a stake and stones standing in the northwest corner of the third share, and from there easterly to the bounds first mentioned.1,2
