Kirby was able to read and write; Robert could read, and not write; and Bennie was too young to have learned to do either. A nephew, Bennie Violet, was also enumerated in the Thomas household in 1880. He was 17 years old, able to read and write, and was working as a laborer. Three additional households of their family members were enumerated nearby, and all were within five households of each other. Benjamin's daughter, Annie Kate, and her husband, Asher B. Armstrong, were enumerated two households above Benjamin and Lucinda on the same census page; in the middle household, between Benjamin's and his daughter, Annie Kate's, Asher's brother and his wife, Louisa and William R. Armstrong, were enumerated; and two households away from Benjamin and Lucinda, on the next census page, another of Benjamin's daughters, Mary E., and her husband, John G.
