(First Wife) Relationship Note Who were Franklin Knepper and Elizabeth Knepper? It seems unlikely to us that Franklin's parents were Magdalena and Godfrey Knepper, or even Mary and Godfrey Knepper, as indicated on Franklin's Find a Grave memorial page. If the birth date of 1849 on his Find a Grave memorial is correct, it would mean he was born 16 years after Magdalena's last child and she would have been in her middle 50s at his birth. Franklin's Find a Grave memorial page indicates he was the son of Godfrey Knepper's second wife, Mary A. Sprankle. This, too, does not feel accurate to us. Franklin, if born in 1849, would have been about 4 years old when Mary A. and Godfrey Knepper married in 1853. And, also, Godfrey's first wife was still alive in 1849. Additionally, Franklin was not enumerated with the Godfrey Knepper family in 1850. While researching to identify his possible biological parents, we've looked at Mary and Ananias Knepper. Their one-year-old son, Franklin, was enumerated with them on the 1850 census in Osnaburg, Stark County, Ohio. Our issue with deciding that the two Franklins are the same Franklin, is that the Franklin of the Find a Grave Memorial died in 1858 at about age 9, and Ananias and Mary's Franklin was enumerated with them in 1860 and was 11 years old. Another wrinkle we've been thinking about is the two Elizabeths: Elizabeth Knepper, born about 1834 and a daughter of Magdalena and Godfrey Knepper, and Elizabeth Knepper, born about 1853 and a daughter of Mary and Ananias Knepper. Godfrey's daughter had married and was enumerated in 1860 with her husband and children, and the other Elizabeth, who was 7 years old, was enumerated on the 1860 census taken in Nimishillen, Stark County, Ohio, with her parents, Mary and Ananias Knepper. That Knepper family was enumerated on 18 June 1860. Here's the issue we're pondering: a possible second, or maybe a duplicate, young Elizabeth', who was 7 years old, was also enumerated that year in the Godfrey Knepper household. On the following day, 19 June, the Godfrey Knepper family was enumerated in Sugar Creek, Stark County, Ohio, which is about 50 miles away from Nimishillen. An Elizabeth Knepper, whom we suspect was not actually the daughter of Mary A. Sprankle and Godfrey Knepper, was enumerated as a member of their household. That Elizabeth, looks as though she might have been the same person as the Elizabeth in the household of Ananias Knepper, other than the fact that his Elizabeth was not reported to be attending school, and the other Elizabeth was. We note also that in the Huber-Hoover book, Mary A. Sprankle, a Huber descendant, was reported to have had only two children, Melissa and Minerva Knepper. Additionally, we do not know the relationship between these two Knepper families. If you can help us with any of this, please let us now...4,2,5,6,7,8,9,10,11

Godfrey was 55 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $3,000, and Martha was 56 years of age. Five children were enumerated with them in 1850. John and Lucy were ages 23 and 19 years, respectively; William was 18 years old and had attended school within the census year; Elizabeth was 16 years old; and another boy, William Fitzgerald, was 11 years old and had attended school within the census year.2

Lewis was 16 years old and his occupation was recorded as "none"; and Thomas and Stephen were ages 12 and 7 years, respectively, and had both attended school within the census year. Elias's brother, Elijah Perkins, was enumerated with his wife and children in the next household on the same census page, and other possible brothers and other Perkins relatives were enumerated nearby.1,2

(Family Member) Name SpellingsSeveral variations in the spelling of the Thornbrough surname found in our research included Thornborough, THORNBURY, THORNBERRY and THORNBRUGH. In some records, an "e" was inserted between "Thorn" and the remainder, spelling the name as THORNEBOROUGH or THORNEBURGH. When speaking the name, the ending was silent, which resulted in all of the different spellings of the name sounding the same to the listener who heard "Thornbro", "Thornburo" or "Thornbra". From the mid to late 1700s, the surname began to appear in our research as THORNBURG or THORNBURGH, the spellings that are still the most common today.2,3

Census US 1800*Margaret was likely enumerated on the 1800 census in the household of her husband Myles Haidan in West Bethlehem, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The household consisted of 9 people, 1 free white male over the age of 45, 1 free white female over the age of 45, 3 free white males aged 16 thru 25, 2 free white females 10 thru 15, and 2 free white females under 10. Four members of the household were under 16 and two members were over 25.2 
Will*2 December 1815Margaret Haidan made his will dated 2 December 1815 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He mentioned his beloved wife Margaret, his two sons James Haidan and Myles Haidan Jr. and three daughters Ann, Elizabeth and Olivia. He left bequests also to Myles Montgomery, Daniel Montgomery and David Power alias HAIDAN. He first directed that all of his lawful debts be paid out of his personal estate except two notes, one in the hands of his son James Haidan and the other in the hands of his son Myles Haidan. He gave one-third part of his real and personal estate to his wife Margaret during her natural life, or if she decided to have the plantation sold, she was to have a child's part out of his whole estate to be at her disposal at her death. He bequeathed $50 to each of three minor boys, to be paid by his executors, without interest as they became of age. Myles and Daniel Montgomery were described as the sons of Humphrey Montgomery deceased, and David Power alias Haidan was not identified further. He gave $30 to each of his unmarried daughters, Elizabeth Haidan and Olivia Haidan and all they claimed in the house as theirs, and whatever house furniture his wife Margaret didn't need. His will directed that after deducting the legacies mentioned, namely the two notes he gave to his sons, the $50 to each of the boys and the $30 each to his two unmarried daughters, the remainder of his estate, real and personal, was to be sold and the proceeds bequeathed in equal part or shares to his son James a share, to his son Myles a share, to his daughter Ann a share, to his daughter Elizabeth a share, and to his daughter Olivia a share. He directed that all of the grain in the stock yard or now growing, and corn, was to be considered, and the winter's meat then preparing was to be for the use of the immediate family. His wife Margaret was to have the exclusive privilege of the dwelling house and fuel during her natural life or until the plantation was sold, and his son James and his son-in-law Simon Litzenberg were to have the privilege conjointly of the house and garden where they were then living, and fuel, until the place was sold. He nominated and appointed his sons James Haidan and Myles Haidan and his son-in-law Simon Litzenberg his executors.3
