Research Notes* The Edward Shepard source presented a convincing narrative, albeit without identifying his sources, regarding the Shepard-Pond relationships between Edward and his second wife, widow Mary Pond, and his daughter Abigail and her husband Daniel Pond. First, the author suggested that the widow Mary Pond was in Cambridge prior to her marriage with Edward Shepard. He stated that "the daughter of Mary Pond married John Blackman, and their first child was born 10 August 1656". Our own research cannot yet verify that marriage, although there was a birth on 10 August 1656 of John Blackman, son of John Blackman recorded in both Dorchester and Cambridge. The author further suggested that because the widow Mary Pond's husband Robert Pond had died in 1637, it would be probable that she brought at least her younger children with her to Cambridge. The exact date of Edward's second wife Mary's arrival in Cambridge is not known, although church records in Cambridge state that she had been dismissed from the church in Dorchester and that her daughter Mary Pond, who had been baptized in Dorchester, was 11 years old when her mother joined the church at Cambridge. Daughter Mary would probably have been aged 11 in about 1646 and Edward Shepard's first wife died in 1649. The church record is unclear as to whether or not Edward Shepard's second wife joined the Cambridge Church before or after her marriage to Edward, although it is certainly possible it was before. Then, second, the author suggested the probability that the Daniel Pond who married Edward Shepard's daughter Abigail was the son of his second wife, the widow Mary Pond. If Daniel was born about 1627, he would have been about age 19 in 1646 and about 21 years old when he married Abigail.1,2,3,4

Steven testified that Jonathan lived in the house when he was not at sea, and that while he was in Jonathan's room, he saw Jonathan put his clothes into a chest and asked him if he would carry the chest to sea. He said that Jonathan answered no, "I will leave these with my mother, that if I com not agayne, shee may dispose of then, & do so of all that I have, onely that she out of thence first pay my debts, and I have writt my mother a note to that purpose." Steven said that Jonathan showed him the note, and he read it, and that the note presented to the court as Jonathan's will was the very same note. Sarah Pond, "neere 17 years of age", although she was probably a little older, said that she saw Jonathan Pond, her brother, write the note, deliver it to his mother and tell her that he desired her to dispose of his estate if he should not return and to tell his mother "and here is a note to that purpose."8

Research Notes* The 1776 letter to Isaac from his mother is of special interest to us. The Wolverton source stated that his mother had signed her name to the letter as Mrs. Mary Wilson, indicating that her husband, Isaac's father was deceased and that she had married again. However, the same source, on the same subject, referred to Isaac's mother as Mary (Wolverton) Sharp, who was actually his wife. The Washington County source included a transcription of Isaac's mother's 1776 letter to him. The transcription, however, did not include a reference to how she signed her name. Of interest, though, is the fact that she wrote in her letter, "We are talking of going to South Carolina again next spring. John's son John, who lives there was here, but I hardly think we will go." Her words have made us think that her second husband may have been a John Wilson, who had a son, John, who lived in South Carolina in 1776.1,2
