John Wheeler1

b. 1786
Father*Micajah Wheeler1 d. 1809
Mother*Sarah Martin1
Birth*1786John Wheeler was born about 1786 in Albemarle County, Virginia. On page 28 of the Wheeler-Puckett source, John's year of birth is estimated to have been 1757, and on pages 11-12, his birth is reported as before 1866 (sic), which we believe was meant to read before 1766; and according to the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Albemarle County, Virginia, he was born about 1786. Because of the about 20-year age difference between these two Johns, our conclusion is that they were two different men. We believe that John, born about 1786, is the one who married Ann Woodson, and was the son of Micajah Wheeler and Sarah Martin. The other John, born about 1757, may have been the John Wheeler who was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia about 1757, son of Nancy and Benjamin Dod Wheeler Sr., who married Susanna Clark in Crittenden County, Kentucky, and died in Livingston County, Kentucky in 1834 or 1838.1,2,3,4,5,6,7
Marriage*14 October 1817He married Ann Woodson, daughter of John Woodson and Elizabeth Bailey, on 14 October 1817 in Albemarle County, Virginia.8,1,5
Census US 1850*4 November 1850Ann and John Wheeler were enumerated on the 1850 census taken on 4 November 1850 in Albemarle County, Virginia. John was 64 years of age and a farmer, and Ann was 52 years of age. Their son, Benjamin, and his wife and children, were enumerated with them. Benjamin was 31 years of age, his wife, Demaris, was age 27, and their children, Mary, John and Mildred were ages 5, 3, and 1 year, respectively.2
Census US 1860*1 August 1860Ann and John Wheeler were enumerated on the 1860 census taken on 1 August 1860 in St. Annes Parish, Charlottesville Post Office, Albemarle County, Virginia. John was 73 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $6,730 and a personal estate valued at $13,650, and Ann was 62 years of age. The couple's son, Benjamin W., was enumerated with his wife and family in his parents' household. Benjamin was 42 years of age, his wife Demaris was age 35, and their children, Mary, John, Mildred, Charles, Susan and Virgil, were ages 14, 12, 10, 8, 5, and 2 years, respectively.3

Marriage*20 December 1799He married Betsy Emerson, daughter of Henry Emmerson Sr., on 20 December 1799 in Albemarle County, Virginia.1,8,9
Will*6 February 1821He prepared his will, which was written with many misspellings, on 6 February 1821 in Barren County, Kentucky, naming his wife, Betsy Wheeler, his older son, William, his daughters, Deliah, Polly and Fanny, his younger son, Micajah, and his son-in-law, Reuben Kinslow, husband of his deceased daughter, Amy.

His wife, during her lifetime, was the primary beneficiary of all of his land and most of his household furniture and stock. Each of his five children, when they came of age or married, was to receive a beast, bridle and saddle, and one good bed. His instructions were clear about wanting each of his five surviving children's total share of his estate, within twelve months after his wife's death, to be made equal in value after the sale of his remaining land, household furniture and stock. He included the direction that "Delilah, Polly and Fanny is to be learnt to read and rite", and that "William and Micajah to be well educated." He gave Reuben Kinslow, widower of his deceased daughter Amy, one horse, a cow and calf, and the bed and furniture that had been Amy's in her lifetime and, at that time, was in Reuben's possession.

He appointed his wife Betsy Wheeler as Executrix, and his son William as Executor to his Estate.

He signed and sealed his name John Wheeler, which was witnessed by his brother, Bond Wheeler, and brothers-in-law, Pleasant Emmerson and Joseph Coleman, husbands of his sisters, Polly and Elizabeth, respectively.10
