Patrick Stephens

Residence*Patrick Stephens resided at Ardvagh, County Cavan.1
(Witness to Agreement) Deed Memorial16 September 1746Patrick Stephens, George Hinds and Thomas Hinds were witnesses on 16 September 1746 when Richard Booth of Drumcarban, County Cavan, his son Robert Booth and Ralph Hinds, also in the County of Cavan, registered a Memorial Articles of Marriage agreement in preparation for the marriage between Ralph's daughter, Margaret Hinds, and Robert Booth. The agreement stated that, in consideration of his affection for his son Robert Booth and of a Marriage Portion payment of one hundred twenty pounds received by Margaret Hinds from her father Ralph Hinds, Richard Booth granted immediately and forever confirmed to Robert and to Robert's and Margaret's lawful heirs, the one half of his Freehold called Drumcarban located in the Barony of Clanmahon, and then the other half at Richard's death. Richard agreed that the Freehold was to be free from all debts and, in case Margaret should survive her husband Robert, subject to an annuity of ten pounds a year to Margaret for life to be paid out of the lands of Drumcarban. It was further agreed in the articles that neither Richard nor Robert would sell, dispose of or contract any debt on the lands and that they should be passed to Robert's and Margaret's heirs forever. The articles were witnessed by Patrick Stephens of Ardvagh and Thomas Hinds and George Hinds of Kilmainham, all in the County of Cavan.1

(Heir) Will15 April 1794Richard's grandfather, Ralph Hinds of Kimmins Mill, County Meath, left a will dated 15 April 1794 and proved on 10 May 1794. His estate was quite large. He named eighteen beneficiaries, including Walter Hinds, Ralph Hinds, Walter Hinds, Anne Hinds, Richard Stephens, Esther (Cannon) Hinds, Matthew Hinds, Thomas Hinds, Alexander Hinds, Mary (Hinds) Walsh, Michael Walsh, Clarissa (Hinds) Stephens, Martha (Hinds) Matthews, Eleanor (Hinds) Smith, Hester (Hinds) Dunn, Hester Stephens, Clarissa Stephens and Mary Anne Stephens. It appears from reading the will that he put much of his estate into a trust or series of trusts, with Thomas Berry and Alexander Berry as trustees, for the purpose of perpetuating the Hinds legacy for eternity. The order of succession was designed to be (1) Walter Hinds, eldest son; (2) Ralph Hinds, fourth son; (3) Walter Hinds, nephew and son-in-law, husband of daughter Anne Hinds; and (4) Richard Stephens, his grandson.

Richard Stephens, identified as Ralph's grandson, was named fourth in the line of succession in the trust created for the Town and Lands of "Nasterstown" in the County of Meath and Toberlyan, Mulrick and Duffin, Ned and Cornagee in the County of Cavan.1
