Birth*10 August 1756Avis Sisson was born on 10 August 1756, according to what was recorded in the records of Uxbridge, Worcester County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England), It would appear from the fact that her maiden surname was not included in the record that the date information was obtained from her gravestone which read Avis Shove, second wife of Josiah, and likely did not include her actual place of birth.2
Marriage*She married Josiah Shove, son of Nathaniel Shove and Hannah Baxter.1

(Names mixed up and at least one generation skipped.) Samuel's son Josiah likely wrote parts of the obituary from his memory of stories his father had told him. And, of course, neither of them had any first-hand information of anything before Samuel's birth in 1789. Margaret Skidmore1

b. 23 March 1803, d. 23 January 1874
Name VariationShe was called Peggy.1
Birth*23 March 1803Margaret Skidmore was born on 23 March 1803 in West Virginia.2
Marriage*27 October 1825She married John Crites on 27 October 1825 in Nicholas County, Virginia.1,3
Census US 1850*6 September 1850Margaret and John Crites were enumerated on the 1850 census taken on 6 September 1850 in District 4, Braxton County, Virginia. John was 48 years of age and a farmer, and Margaret was 46 years of age. Eleven of their children were enumerated with them in 1850. William R.'s middle initial was recorded by the census taker as "H.". He was 23 years of age and worked as a farmer with his father. Marshall, whose occupation was recorded as "none" Elizabeth, Michael and Wilson were ages 20, 18, 15 and 13 years, respectively; Virginia, Naham, Mounterville and Jesse were ages 11, 10, 8 and 6 years, respectively; and Abraham and John were ages 4 and 2 years, respectively. The couple's second daughter, Lucinda, was not enumerated with her parents and siblings and was about 20 years old in 1850. She was likely either accidently missed by the census taker or away from home when the census was taken. The couple's married daughter, Sarah, was enumerated nearby with her husband, Isaac Rose, on the next previous census page.4,5
Census US 1860*3 July 1860Margaret and John Crites were enumerated on the 1860 census taken on 3 July 1860 near the Braxton Court House Post Office, Braxton County, Virginia. John was 56 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $5,000 and a personal estate valued at $275, and Margaret waw 56 years of age. Neither was able to read or write. Five of their children were enumerated with them in 1860. Michael was 23 years of age; Mounterville, Jesse, Naham and Abraham were ages 18, 17, 14 and 13 years, respectively, and had all attended school within the census year; and their daughter, Virginia, was 18 years old and had also attended school within the census year. Also enumerated with the Crites family in 1860 was the couple's 5-year-old granddaughter, Catharine Cutlip, the daughter of the Crites's daughter, Lucinda, and her husband, George Allen Cutlip. We've not yet found the enumeration in 1860 of Catharine's parents, although the family of her father's sister and brother-in-law, Catharine and William Ellison, in 1860, was enumerated in the next household on the same census page as Margaret and John Crites, with young Catharine. And Catharine's father, before her parents' marriage, on the 1850 census, had lived with the Ellison family. In 1850, the Crites and Ellison families were enumerated 6 census pages apart. In 1870, after the birth of Catharine's brother and the death of her father, her mother, Lucinda (Crites) Cutlip, with the two children were with the Ellison family whose household was enumerated one census page before the Crites household. Additionally, a Henry F. Crites, who was 19 years old, was also enumerated in the Crites household in 1860. Henry was not included with the John Crites family in 1850 or 1870 and we have not been able to determine with any certainty which Crites family he belonged to.6
Census US 1870*18 July 1870Margaret and John Crites were enumerated on the 1870 census taken on 18 July 1870 near the Braxton Court House Post Office, Franklin, Braxton County, West Virginia. John was 67 years of age and farming, with real estate valued at $1,200 and a personal estate valued at $204, and Margaret was 68 years of age and keeping house. Three of their children were enumerated with them and five others were very nearby. In their parents' household were Mounterville and Naham, who were ages 28 and 24 years, respectively, and farming with their father, and Virginia who was 19 years old and recorded with "no occupation". John and Margaret's sons, William, Jesse and Abraham, and daughter, Sarah, and her husband, Isaac Rose, were all recorded with their families on the same census page with their parents, and their son, William Riley Crites, was enumerated with his family near the top of the next census page.7
Death*23 January 1874She died of fever on 23 January 1874 in Braxton County, West Virginia, at age 702
Burial* and was buried in Crites Mountain Cemetery, Braxton County.2

Alexander Slator1,2

b. 1707, d. 1772
Name-SpellingsSeveral spelling variations of the SLATOR surname have been found in our research, including SLEATER and SLATER.2,1
Birth*1707Alexander Slator was born in 1707.3
Marriage*He married Mary Bevan of Cootehill, County Cavan in Ireland.3
Residence*Mary and Alexander Slator lived at Whitehill, County Longford.3,4
(Grantee) Deed Memorial1 August 1770 On 1 August 1770 Walter Hinds of Corrakane, County Cavan, Ireland, and his son Thomas Hinds made a Memorial Deed, Conveyance and Will agreement with Alexander Slator of Whitehill, County Longford on behalf of his daughter, Anne Sleater. After reciting that a marriage was intended to occur between Thomas Hinds and Anne Sleater and affirming Walter Hinds' love and regard for his son Thomas, Walter officially made a "child's part and portion" transfer by deed, to Thomas, of the Lands of Gortnatrieve and Behy "with all their appurtenances (rights and privileges) in as full and ample a manner" as Walter Hinds "enjoyed and possessed". Next, Alexander Sleater, in consideration of the intended marriage, agreed to pay to Thomas Hinds £800 Sterling as a "marriage portion" and finally, Thomas Hinds agreed that in consideration of the marriage portion, as soon as the marriage had been solemnized, would settle on his new wife, Anne, by proper deed, a jointure of £60 yearly in case there should be no issue from the marriage or in case of issue, £50 yearly. Thomas also agreed that after his death, Anne's jointure would continue and that the Rights and Title of the Lands would descend to the male issue of the marriage and that after Anne's death, her jointure should also return to the male issue of the marriage. In his agreement, Thomas reserved the right "at any time he should think proper" to raise on the Lands the sum of £1000 as portions for younger children. It was further agreed that should there be no male issue of the marriage, then it should be lawful for Thomas Hinds to raise the sum of £2000 from the Lands for the female issue of the marriage and that then, and in that case, the Lands should revert and return to Thomas' father, Walter Hinds, and his heirs. It was further agreed that should Thomas survive Anne and decide to marry a second wife, that then it should be lawful for Thomas to raise on the Lands £40 as a Dower to be settled on the woman at the second marriage. Witnesses to the Articles of Agreement were the Reverend George Carson of Cragham and John Hinds of Corrakane, County of Cavan, and the Memorial was executed, signed and sealed by Thomas Hinds in the presence of John Hinds and Thomas Faris of the City of Dublin, Gentleman. John Hinds made an oath stating that he was a subscribing witness to the Articles of Agreement and to this Memorial, saying that he saw the Articles duly executed by the parties of Walter Hinds, Thomas Hinds and Alexander Sleater and that he also saw the Memorial executed by Thomas Hinds. The final document was received and filed by the Registry of Deeds at 12 o'clock noon on the 12th of Nov 1777, soon after the death of Walter Hinds of Corrakane.2,1
Death*1772He died in 1772, probably at Whitehill, County Longford, Ireland.3

Marriage*1771She married Thomas Hinds of Bruce Hall, son of Walter Hinds and Martha Faris, in Ireland.4
