Arminta Elizabeth Ratliff1

b. 27 June 1844, d. 6 October 1901
Father*Robert Ratliff2 b. 1820
Mother*Mary Edwards2 b. 1824, d. 1857
Birth*27 June 1844Arminta Elizabeth Ratliff was born on 27 June 1844 in Pike County, Kentucky.1
(Daughter) Census US 18508 August 1850Arminta E. was enumerated on the 1850 census taken on 8 August 1850 in the household of her parents in Pike County, Kentucky. She was 5 years old.2
(Daughter) Death1857She was about 13 years old when her mother died at about age 33, after Arminta's brother Carroll was born on 26 May 1856. Their father was left with eight young children ranging in age from 16 years to newly born.3,4
(Daughter) Marriage24 December 1857Her father married a second time to Sarah P. York on 24 December 1857.4
(Daughter) Census US 186013 July 1860Arminta was enumerated on the 1860 census taken on 13 July 1860 in the household of her father and stepmother in Sherrill, Texas County, Missouri. She was 14 years old.3
Census US 1870*13 August 1870Arminta E. Ratliff was enumerated as the head of her household on the 1870 census taken on 13 August 1870 in Sherrill, Texas County, Missouri. She was 25 years of age, keeping house, and had a personal estate valued at $200. Two of her brothers, Elijah and Carroll, ages 18 and 13 years old, respectively, were enumerated with her. They were both working as farm laborers. Two very young children were also enumerated in Arminta's household. William, who was 3 years old, and Francis, age 4 months. They had both been born in Missouri and were recorded with the surname Ratliff. We've not been able to determine who their parents were, and have found no evidence to indicate Arminta was their mother. We also have not found any record of Arminta's father, Robert Ratliff, or stepmother, Sarah P. (York) Ratliff, with any certainty, after the family's enumeration on the 1860 census in Sherrill. We wonder if both parents had died before the 1870 census was taken or if, possibly, only Robert had died and Sarah had married again.5
Marriage*23 April 1874She married, as his second wife, Edward Emmett Murphy, son of John Murphy and Mary Ann Fiddy, on 23 April 1874.6,1
(Last Wife) Research NotesEvidence indicates that Frances Murphy and Florence Eliza Jane Murphy, biological daughters of Edward Emmett Murphy, both believed their biological mother was Arminta Elizabeth (Ratliff) Murphy, their father's second, or possibly even his third or fourth, wife. Arminta raised the girls and certainly considered them her daughters. Confusion over biological relationships, of course, doesn't really matter, except for genealogical purposes. Maybe, if anyone really cares, DNA will one day solve the issue. For now, we'll explain our research findings and current thinking. Edward Emmett Murphy married, as his first wife, Mary A. Robinson, and they had a son, Thomas William Edward Murphy, born on 4 December 1865. Researchers tracking Thomas believed his mother died before 1870 because Thomas was enumerated, at 5 years of age, on the 1870 census in the household of his father's brother, William F. Murphy. Those same researchers also reported that Thomas's father married a second wife in 1874. We haven't ever found Thomas together with either of his parents.

For most of his life, Edward Emmett Murphy was able to do a masterful job of avoiding the census takers. We found him with his parents in Florence, Lauderdale County, Alabama, in 1850 and 1860, and are embarrassed to admit we have been unable to find him in any of the 1870, 1880, 1900 or 1910 censuses.

Edward Emmett Murphy married Arminta Elizabeth (Ratliff) Murphy on 23 April 1874, which would make our research a lot less complicated if Edward's two daughters, Frances Murphy and Florence Eliza Jane Murphy, hadn't both been born earlier than that. Frances was born on 31 March 1870 and Florence on 16 June 1873.

So... How many wives did Edward Emmett Murphy have? Was Mary A. Robinson the biological mother of all three of his children? If not, who was the biological mother of Frances and Florence? Or... Oops! Did Frances and Florence have different biological mothers? Whatever the truth, Arminta, Frances and Florence all considered Arminta Elizabeth (Ratliff) Murphy to be their "real" mother.7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,1,6
Death*6 October 1901She died on 6 October 1901 in Iron County, Missouri, at age 571
Burial* and was buried in Collins Cemetery, Minimum, Iron County.1
