Essex County, Massachusetts
Essex County was created by the Massachusetts Bay Colony on 10 May 1643 as one of its four original counties, along with Suffolk, Middlesex and the Old Norfolk. It was then comprised of the towns of Salem, Lynn, Wenham, Ipswich, Rowley, Newbury, Gloucester, and Andover, which were subdivided over the centuries to produce the modern composition of cities and towns.
